benitez on wide points margin, chavez would`nt be able to get anywhere near el radar, who was an even better defensive fighter than pernell whitaker, who took chavez to school(despite the dodgy decision)only chance chavez has is the fact that benitez might come in unprepared,he was a terrible trainer

Chavez finds a way to win. In his prime, he was a monster - if you don't believe me, ask Edwin Rosario.

You compare apples and oranges. How is Rosario similar to Benitez? Benitez is leagues above Rosario.keithmoonhangover wrote:Chavez finds a way to win. In his prime, he was a monster - if you don't believe me, ask Edwin Rosario.

Duran was a much better fighter than Chavez and could not land anything meaningful on Benitez. Styles makes fights and Benitez's style is nightmare for Chavez. The only way Benitez loses this fight is by robbery. Let's not forget the Whitaker/Chavez was not even close and it was a draw. Chavez did not win more than 3 rounds at best and he got a huge gift decision.

That also was in a lower division.

When I think of the problems Benitez had with Curry and Weston I like Julio in this bout. However, on the other hand, those were non-title bouts and maybe Benitez wasn't "up" for them. I say a peak Benitez wins a fairly close decision.
As for Benitez-Duran being a gauge for Benitez-Chavez, I would argue that Chavez at 140 was a better fighter than the 154 pound Duran. Each at his best, I l say Duran was considerably better than Chavez and I would go with Duran over Benitez at 140 or 147.

Why bring up an inferior fighter from a lower division?

I was merely stating what a great fighter Chavez was. I happen to think he would beat Benitez in a fight of the decade fifteen rounder. If you don't then that's fine.
Re: wilfred benitez vs julio cesar chavez ..15rds...140 pounds
I don't think the fight would be a great one. Chavez never even fought a 15 rounder so I don't know how he'd even perform in one.keithmoonhangover wrote:Rover wrote:Why bring up an inferior fighter from a lower division?![]()

In his prime he was one of the fittest boxers in the world. He'd have done fifteen rounds without a problem. Watch the last round of the first Taylor fight and see how much he has left after 12 gruelling rounds.Rover wrote:I don't think the fight would be a great one. He admitted he was very tired. Hard to say how someone will do at something when he's never done it before.
I don't think Benitez would fade, though; he didn't appreciably fade against Cervantes.

Of course he'd be tired, who wouldn't after 12 rounds of being punched in the face by a prime Meldrick Taylor. Watch that last round. Chavez still had plenty left.Rover wrote:He admitted he was very tired. Hard to say how someone will do at something when he's never done it before.

In round 12. I haven't seen anything to indicate he'd have an advantage in that area over a prime Benitez at jr. welter.keithmoonhangover wrote:Of course he'd be tired, who wouldn't after 12 rounds of being punched in the face by a prime Meldrick Taylor. Do you think Chavez would struggle with the 15 round distance?Rover wrote:In round 12. A few minutes ago you said...
"I don't know how he'd even perform in one."
Now you're saying....
"No more or less than Wilfred at jr. welter."
Make your mind up sir.

I don't for sure because he hasn't ever fought a 15 rounder.keithmoonhangover wrote:A few minutes ago you said...

Your question to me asked how I "thought" he'd do.
I don't "know" because he's never done it.
Get it?

Fast guys troubled, but didn't always beat Chavez. Witness Randall, Whitaker, Taylor. Camacho was fast but no longer had the heart for a tough, grueling fight.
Benitez would have Chavez punching at shadows all night long, but with his lack of power, he would be unable to keep Julio out of his face the entire way.
Get the feeling that Benitez would deserve the decision, but the judges would instead reward the aggresiveness, intensity and not-stop punching of Chavez and hand the Mexican a close decision.
