Jennins V Pryce

Post by tonyevs »

Excellent fight and went just as predicted :TU:

My throat is still sore from the last round...thought he had him then...he had just over a minute left...but just too tired.

Superb fight though :TU:

Did McGuigan have a point about Jennins reaching his level...I think he could be correct...a better fighter won`t let Michael off the hook :-?

I thought Barry McGuigan did a better job tonight, he looked more relaxed and it was 100% better to watch.

Just love to listen to Dukes commentry...I cry with tears of laughter:P :D

Yes, it was a good fight, although apart from rounds 1 and 12, Jennings kind of dominated.

But, LOrd how many times did the commentary team have to tell us "What a superb fight" etc etc we were watching.....from everyone who opened their mouth..

It kind of tested my enjoyment of the fight - the commentary team are there to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of a fight, and constantly reminding the viewers of what a great fight it is, is not adding anything.

Add some insight...... like saying 'oh what a great fight this is' repeatedly will suddenly make the viewers go "oh shit yes, it is a great fight, now I can really get into it - thanks Duke."

And much as I like DUke as a man, his commentary adds nothing....

Good old Duke "Keeps you on the seat...of umm...your chair" classic stuff!

Good fight, was willing Price to do it in the end but he just didn't have the quality in those middle rounds. Jennings does put his shots together well but doesn't have the power or the chin to progress much further. No shame in that though and there are lots of good domestic fights around for him in the welterweight division.

Excellent fight, Jennings started badly again, but managed to get through it to win a deserved decision, i think he can move up to Europeon level but not make to much of a mark on world level, he's 28 so has to step up to the next level soon.
Bradley Pryce was good value last night, i can't beleive he's only 24, seems to have been around for ages. Hopefully he can get a couple of easier fights to build him up again, he can't keep on being in these tough matches.

I wasn't to impressed with some of the camera work on last nights show, i didn't like it when they kept trying to film the boxers through the ropes, maybe the director had been watching the contender and was trying to get the inside work. That only works when you can take all the film to a studio and cut all the different camera angles to suit you, not when its live action.

Some of the commetry was a little over the top , they called the Thomas McDonagh v Dean Walker an excellent fight and would like to see it again, i though it was awful.
And why didn't we see Ryan Rhodes v Hussain Osman, i would say that had got to be a better fight than McDonagh.

Keep slagging Duke off.

He is doing a better job than any of you lot would.

He is a boxing man through and through. He loves the game.

Leave him alone.

i wasn't slagging anyone off, just when they call a medicore fight "excellent" its over the top, Duke is a good boxing man, but i think that he's better giving analysis of a fight either in the studio or after the event, not as a co-commentator.

I agree with the assessments of the fight. I think McGuigan was correct as well in not over hyping Jennings. There are some decent challenges at Welterweight so if he can get around 2,000 fans a time and TV exposure he may as well get his Lonsdale belt to keep over the next year.

Even though he got hurt early and late I don't think he is too chinny, but he's just unsure what to do when he gets tagged. I think that if he sorts that out then he could go to Euro level. I think that McGuigan also mentioned that Urkal was the champ, and is probably too experienced at this stage.

Big contender for small hall domestic fight of the year.

I was throwing stuff at the tele, Pryce could have and should have won this fight. He had plenty of time to prepare and seemed to hurt Jennings everytime he landed flush.

Why did he do next to nothing in those middle rounds - just allowing Jennings to dictate the action. He didn't look tired in the corner, I cannot help but think its going to be a lot of "what ifs" for Bradley.

He could have stopped him in the 1st and the 12th. I don't think he relised just how hurt Jennings was in the first, not by the KD but after that - he didn't follow it up. In the last he allowed Jennings to survive, it was as if he didn't want it enough - he should have been riggling to try and get out of the holding. I did also think Ian John Lewis did Jennings a favour in the first by continually talking to Pryce (warning him) when Jennings was hurt.

As for Jennings, I think he has the moves offensively to move up to European level - but not sure about his punch resistance at that level. Pryce is an okay puncher, but not a world class puncher.

Barry was excellent, nice to here him say "ITV needed to see a good fight" - I wonder if he reads the forums :TU: I can remember almost those words being said here.

I'm enjoying John Rawling's commentary, one slight comment though - it was Lloyd Honeyghun who used to say "you don't get paid over time" not Joe Calzaghe.

I didn't think Pryce could have done any more to win that fight. Jennings conditioning was superior, by the end of the first round I didn't see him losing at any stage. It was a rough start for sure but he didn't have to come back from the brink.

I do agree about some of the commentating. I believe when the guys on the mic go on and on about how "you'll not see better action than this" it sends out a message to the casual viewer that this kind of fight is a rarity, when in actual fact we see tons of cracking battles throughout the year all over the world.

Good fight. I agree with Stu, Pryce will be kicking his own arse for not finishing Jennings. I would love to see the British Champ take on the Commonwealth Champ, Jennings v Anderson, what a great fight that would be! While it lasted anyway. I believe Kev would have too much for Michael after watching his punch resistance against Pryce.

Anyone go to the show? was wondering how Ryan Rhodes looked, saw he had a good win over Osman on the undercard , it wasn't shown on ITV.

Does anyone think Jennings could do anything at world level, hes pretty relentless, great conditioning, fast combinations, quite a similar fighter to Ricky Hatton in many ways.

Could you imagine if it was Zab Judah throwing punches last night instead of Pryce, would have been all over in the 1st round.
Unfortunatly for Jennings the Welters is a strong division at the top , you've got Judah, Spinks, Mosley, Margarito and maybe De La Hoya plus some good contenders as well. Can't see Jenning making much of an impact there

Michael Jennins is a very good fighter and his team have done a great job to make him into the boxer he is now.
But what I think will block his progress on the world stage is his punch power, whilst his punches are good and accurate they are more Hatton than Witter (old version).

Any fighter can be hurt if hit correctly, but the world champions that suffer this as much as Jennins does will have had the KO power to bail them out of trouble.

The top British domestic scene is no different to the European scene, so yes he can compete on an even footing there but if he was to take it one stage further to the world scene then he would quickly come unstuck, the welterweight division is heavy with bigger punchers than Bradley and they would finish him off.

And I agree with STU with the comment about the ref, I thought exactly the same.
But then again us Welshmen are going to stick together  :TU:

Perhaps I am being harsh, but had Pryce had only 3 weeks prep I would agree that he couldn't have done much more than he did. However, he's had a long time to prepare - why wasn't his conditioning better?

I don't want to sound harsh on Jennings, who is as fit as a fiddle and did the pace well, but it was very early in the fight when Pryce started doing more resting than fighting and then looking as fresh as a daisy in the corner. I'm not saying his conditioning could have been better than Jennings', but it could have been better than what is was, or what he showed. If he was knackered that early, then I don't think he trained well enough - if he wasn't then he was a fool. My personal opinion is that it was the latter the way he looked in the corner.

On a side note, to either get checked over in Hospital last night. I was a bit concerned at Jennings after the bell. He spoke well, but was on shaky legs even as the scores were being called out. I was worried.

Pryce didn't seem to be listening to his corner that well last night, came into a few bollockings from Enzo as the rounds went by.

Spinks, Delahoya are both at 154 and Mosleys fighting Vargas at 154. But yea Judah would put him away. Then again Zoo would put away the Hatton that was in with Maggee.

When is Spinks scheduled to fight at 154, I haven't heard this - I hope you are wrong, its a big mistake for him.

Margarito vs Jennings would be a mismatch I'm afraid.

Wasn't there in person, but a good friend of mine (a stablemate of Jennings), was keeping his eye on how Rhodes performed.
Apparantly Osman made a fight of it, and Rodes was struggling until the ref stopped it on a cut. :box:

Posters on ESB say Spinks is fighting at 154, I'm not sure. I think everyones waiting to see where DLH is fighting - Mosleys moved back up to get Vargas because he wants DLH again

I thought Jennings looked in trouble on his way to the ring: he had the look of a man going to the gallows.
Great fight, but by round 8 or so, I was hoping one of them would find a finishing punch, because they were both taking far too many head shots in there.
I'm not sure about Jennings punch power - taking out Vincent shows he can certainly hit some - so I think it might be down to the fact Pryce takes a pretty good punch. Usualy he only gets stopped by very big punchers: ie Bami and Sinclair.

Both showed huge heart. And no doubt Pryce threw away two big chances to win. Jennings was out on his feet in the 12th, and was in big trouble in the first, but Bradley for some reason took his foot off the gas in that opening round.
If it looks an easy night, Pryce somehow finds a way to turn it into a war.
