Mayweather vs Alvarez : Is it that exciting folks ?

A lot of commotion has been generated after it was announced that Floyd is to fight Alverez. A lot of hype has surrounded this kid since he beat Ryan Rhodes by stoppage and perhaps before that in certain respects. The kid is 22 years of age and has had a lot of fights and gained some experince early in his career. Whilst Some fighters like Brook are still awaiting to have a first world title challenge at 26 years of age, Alzerez has been in and amongst it since he was 20 years of age. This to a degree created some rumblings in the boxing world. Rhodes, after he fought Alverez was complimentary and said that he was something special. Other commentators and writers have given similar plaudits and Alarez is seen by many to be one of the fighters, along with the likes of Broner, to take the sport by storm over the next ten years or so.

I saw the Rhodes fight with Alverez. He sempt to be quite predictable to me with regards to his style. Tough, durable, walk forward, throw bombs, fight on the front foot, go in search of your opponent. I wasn't too impressed, but i reserved my judgement untill i had seen more of his future fights. I could see holes in his style that could be expolited. So whilst i wasn't overly impressed and was struggling to see what the hype was about, i reminded myself that the kid was 20 years of age and had more experience to gain, techniques to learn and would improve in gis general ring craft. Having seen some of those future fights, i don't see a great deal of change in his style. I am begining to think that he may not have the complete package to dominate over the next ten years and that the Floyd fight may be the start of of a more realistic view of Alvarez.

Let's look at his record. He fought a 39 year old Baldomir, who was a blown up welter-weight. Then he fought a 38 year old Lovemore N'Dou. Then he went the distance with Mathew Hatton, a guy outside of the world class spectrum. Then he stopped Rhodes in the 12th round, another fighter who fought his career on the fringes of the world scene. Then he fights a guy called Gomez, who's only real distinction is getting stopped mid fight by Cotto at welterweight. Then came a win against another blown up welter-weight in Cintron. After that came a points win over a 40 year old Shane Mosley, again a fighter who fought his career at welterweight. Then we have Lopez, who fought at light welterweight in 2011 and fought at welterweight the fight before Alvarez. The finally we have Trout, who had a good points win over over a faded Miguel Cotto.

I don't wish to rain on the parade or come across as needlessy critical of Alvarez, but does he really live up to the hype ? Does his record, when looked at with some proportion, really suggest the new big name on boxing ? Or do we have some smoke and mirrors action going on here ? That record is padded with named fighters well past their primes, even shot in respect of Baldomir, N'Duo and Mosley. Most of the fighters were natural welterweights or had fought most of their careers at weltwerweight. I see a total shut out for Mayweather in this fight. Alvarez is ripe for counter shots. His style is way too predictable to out smart Mayweather. I don't even see the debate that say's that Alvarez will out muscle Floyd. If anything, it will be Alvarez that feels the pace. He will ship lead right hands all night long and be pot shotted out of the fight by Floyd.

For me, this won't be the fight people are expecting, it will IMO be a total and complete shut out.............

I agree mate, it's an exciting fight in some respects as he's an upcoming, unbeaten fighter who COULD have more in his locker than he has shown us so far. I think the fight is too soon for him though and that as you say, there are many holes in his makeup and he hasn't been all that impressive in the fights I've seen him. A lot of hype, but not quite backed it up when I've seen him, it's still the most interesting fight Mayweather's been in for a while I suppose.

i enjoyed the read... you have made some excellent points mate that i didnt even think of... i dont see anything but a win for MW.... however i do feel that this will be closer than MW recent fights... i was scratching my head thou and was trying to think of a bigger fight than this.. maybe mathysse v garcia.. (which is more of a personal dislike for garcia) ... mathysse v broner.. bradley v khan.. and from these shores...brook v khan or groves v froch.. but they are more personal preferences....

alvarez isnt in his prime yet so i do think in years to come he will dominate after MW hangs up his gloves..

Yeah, i too think it is way too soon to fight Floyd, but he this window of opportunity and so he has to take it..............

I don't personally think he has the style and his resume when broken down, isn't as impressive as people try and make out.

yeah surprised me to.. i thought that was one fight that would never happen.. i know people are making drama about the catch weight, but not sure that will really make any difference ... MW s just a cut above everyone really and has been for the last decade and a half.. maybe pac would have given him a good fight a few years ago but that boat sailed long time ago and i still see a MW win in that to...

The jury is still out for me then when it comes to avarez dominating but who will fit in MW shoes once he has retired... :??

For me, there is no one at welter (bradley, marquez, pacquiao, khan) that beats floyd
And no one at light middle is close to canelo, imo.

Floyd is better than them all, there are some of those names might give him a better fight, based on the clash of styles and i agree, floyd may well pick canelo apart as his style is so ideally suited to floyd.
But all we can ask of floyd is to fight the best and canelo is for me, the strongest opposition in and around that wieght
