I was a big fan of Paul Hodkinson when I was in my early teens. He's not exactly unknown, but I was constantly having to tell my ignorant class mates who he was and explain why he wasn't going to fight Tyson.

Hoko was a big name at the time. Heartbreaking, his first World Title defeat on ITV.

'The Casbah Kid' Najib Daho. Very much a local celebrity in Greater Manchester. I followed
Lloyd Christie's career a great deal and thought he could get himself a world title shot but
was stopped in 6 rounds in France against Tex N'Kalaente for the European crown.

Yep, I remember being absolutely gutted when he lost Mickey. Consoled myself with the thought he'd lost to the next great Mexican fighter, but then Vaca got taken out by Kevin Kelley!
I always had a lot of time for Ross Hale and Glen Catley, as I was a West Country boy. Think those guys (and, of course, the Sanigars) did a lot to put Bristol on the map in boxing terms, as it's never been a hotbed.

used to follow carl crook when i was younger, being from the chorley,he was a bit of a small town hero and a decent bloke to boot, had 2 right right tears up with najib daho at the preston guild hall, which were viewed as a local grudge matches
i could`nt believe it when he lost to paper skinned bill schwer, that fight took it out of him and after a beating at the hands of the excellent john baptiste mendy he retired with his functions intact

My hero when I first got really into it was the dynamo, Colin dunne. Loved his style.tough little man.proper fell in love after getting the chance to move around with him when our club did a 20/4 hour sparathon for charidee.if not for that man I truly don't think I would've got into it enough to fight

Yep, but I was clearly referring to Vargas, hence the reference to Kevin Kelley!

Yep, know what you mean... that was a cruel way to lose. Didn't get me as much as the Goyo fight though for some reason - I think it was because I thought he was better than Villasana so would win the rematch, whereas with Vargas it was a bit of a beatdown that didn't leave much room for optimism afterwards.
On a separate note, I'd squeeze Dennis Andries in there as well - while he had a degree of fame, it was nothing in relative terms when you think he held a world title and fought Hearns etc... I remember him saying he travelled home from one title fight on the tube! Just loved his warrior spirit and the way after getting worked over by Hearns his response was to go and train at the Kronk to improve. Legend.

Didn't Cooper do a bit of unlicensed? I think he beat Darren Rhodes in the Northern Counties ABAs on 97.

I'd not been boxing long when I read about a 17 year old(?) lad called Jimmy Batten who'd won 75 straight(?) so got my dad to take me to Stratford Town Hall to watch him.

Jimmy obviously went on to better things and it was a pleasure to train alongside him at the Royal Oak gym, albeit for just an hour or so, and to have him present my winners trophy at an amateur show some 7 or so years after that first night in Stratford.
