Liston was 31 when he lost to Ali the first time, so I don't think he was exactly over the hill.
Liston's actual DOB is the subject of a fair amount of speculation.

If you do a search on this forum, there is a thread on this very subject, and it seems that census data and recent research pretty much backs up the general age listed on boxrec. Unfortunately for Sonny, he just ran into a guy who made him look washed up. Sonny was a good puncher with decent skills, but he was pretty slow and would have struggled with just about any of the faster and skilled HW champs like Tunney, Walcott and Holmes. He would probably have injured his shoulder against all of them the same way he injured it against Ali. Swing and a miss!!! :TU:
