...does Bunce ever fact check his stuff?
Coming on to some forums people often say "Whether you like him or not, Bunce knows his stuff". Sadly in the last 2 pieces of his I've read, I've seen clear factual inaccuracies that further my idea that he just thinks he knows his stuff and that his televised faux pas aren't just a heat of the moment thing but are him revealing that he doesn't know as much as he thinks.
In a piece published on Tuesday in the Independent his column started with:
"Every two years since 1925 the European amateur boxing championships"
Of course we all know that's a load of crap. They are often every 2 years but there are numerous exceptions such as the championships held in:
1930, 1934, 1937, 1942 (even though the results were annulled), 1947, 1996 and 2011 (and various championships that were missing early on).
In another recent article Bunce said:
"The last people sent to prison for fixing fights served time on Alcatraz in the Fifties and they were, it has to be said, gangsters."
With out much research it's easy to find people who were arrested this century!
So, does he ever fact check or does his just spew what he feels like and hopes no one realises it's full of factual holes?

I suppose his articles are only as good as his sources. Maybe he is fact checking, but in the wrong places.

Don't make excuses for him. All he has to do is a quick search on google about he's relevant topic's.chad wrote:I suppose his articles are only as good as his sources. Maybe he is fact checking, but in the wrong places.

I don't know whether he checks his facts but I've never liked him and always found him very annoying. I guess he's a Marmite sort of dude.

He does most of it from memory. He does, whatever people say, have a great knowledge and experience of the sport. It would be easy for anyone to scour the Internet for facts and figures.

You'll have to explain to Bunce what a "fact" is, first, in order for him to check them. :P

I think you're being a bit overly critical, especially on the biannual Europeans. The years listed were during a pretty bad time for Europe and a lot of sports hit the skids.
I suppose he could have said something along the lines of missing during the inter-war period and WW2 but it's not really necessary. In 88 years, you've picked out 7 examples with 5 being during a dark time for europe.

Even established media with editors and sub editors get facts wrong and leave things open to interpretation. Bunce is very good and I enjoy watching him, my wife can't watch him at all; he may get bits wrong but is going live, can be asked any question, unscripted and has paid his dues - none of the others knows anything about Martin Harley, Alan Adams, Danny Peters, Jamie Branch, Craig Spacie or Shaun Gray and Bunce will know all sorts and have some good stories about them; I like a fan being 'in there' and am happy he's doing well.bengulnaci1 wrote:Does that even still exist?@matt___s wrote:I think its called responsible journalism.mickey1975 wrote:He does most of it from memory. With the examples I've used they were in print so he hasn't got the excuse of being live.palooka wrote:

He should be sacked for two such catastrophic errors. Who the hell does he think he is.
