James Toney vs Gerald McClellan

Post by elmersalsa »

"The Battle of the Bad Boys" features a master (Toney) and complete fighter vs a phenomenal puncher (McClellan). Who wins?

I seen sparring footage of these two. Was wonderful to see. No clinching No Holding, Just standing toe to toe and boxing. But if they fought in the Pro's I would go with McClellan

Unless Toney struggles with the weight, I can't see it any other way.

toney probably should gotten a L vs reggie johnson (due to the KD)

more than likely got a gift against dave tiberi

this would not be an easy bout for either fighter

toney the more technically sound fighter could at times be inactive and i think the sheer length and size factor of g-man would help him out a lot as toney would look to shoulder roll and crouch, g-man would just simply throw his weight around and back toney into a corner and unload combinations

if toney fights his perfect fight he should win a 7-5, 8-4 (at most) decision. the slickness and toughness of toney would make it difficult for g-man to land the clean blows he would want to.

how ever g-man's jab, lateral movement, sheer size and strength would see him competitive the whole way through and i can see him getting a KD against Toney making my prediction be :

115-112/114-113, James Toney
I wholeheartedly agree Toney got a gift v. Tiberi.

People looking at the worst of Toney @ 160 have to do the same for McClellan, who actually lost two fights on points to fairly average fighters. So by that logic, he was "worse" at middleweight.

I think if Gerald couldn't knock them out, he was lost for ideas in the main. Toney's chin and defensive skills keep him in the fight early and late in the fight is where it becomes telling and for that reason I think both he and McCallum stop him late.

Benn and Jackson both hurt him, he wasn't invincible. He had boxing skills but he didn't use them, preferring to use his power, leverage and brute strength to overpower guys. He could also be out-boxed. Yes he was a decent ama fighter but 3 round fights are not comparable to 12 round fights with a legitimate threat opposing you and fighting back. His run at middle is one of the most overrated runs ever, he was in against DK stooges who (Jackson I aside) didn't come to fight.

It's a match I would have loved to see. However, I go along with the majority that on his best day Toney would take this unless he came in out of shape in which case he could get outworked.

No matter how hard the punch, they'd just careen off Toney's Iron clad dome harmlessly.Take away Mc's power, not much left. Toney W12.

Toney could be rocked/dropped, as Johnson and RJJ showed, but I think (like Chavez with Rosario) he'd recover and win (though not dominate like Chavez did; I'm just comparing how the reactions to big shots would be).

Toney on points for me.

A chin usually beats a puncher & Toney has one of the best chins ever.

That's not to say that it wouldn't have been competitive, but I think Toney's all round game would have sealed the deal.

Well if we go by the history, I guess not, since it would not be at heavyweight. When Toney LOOKED like he might be on Roids he wasn't....but when he LOOKED like he wasn't....well I guess that's when you could tell somethin' wadn't rite.......lol. He had that Pizza, Ice Cream and roids look.
