Adrien Broner : The next big thing in boxing ??

Post by Quixall »

Ok, so let's talk Adrien Broner. This is a fighter who is 23 years of age and if he beats Malignaggi on the 22nd June, he will become a three time, three weight world champion. Having already won world championships at Super-Featherweight and Lightweight, Broner is moving up two weight classes to take on Malignaggi for a version of the welterweight crown. Now, some may say, so what in this day and age of the alphabet titles and multi-weight divisions, but all that considered, it's still a good achievement for someone so young. Broner seems to be dividing opinion amongst boxing fans. Not only on his boxing ability, but also on his personlaity and general demeanor. This is a guy who wears flamboyant ring wear, large sunglasses and a perma-smile to light up a room. He raps his own songs upon entry to the ring and then does a wobble dance in the ring, upon rendering his victims incapacitated. For some, his style is nauseating and a little embaressing, taking too much from the persona of Floyd Mayweather to be totally authentic and original. But how good is Broner ??

Adrien Broner has had 26 fights and has won every one of them. He is a current two weight world champion, having won belts at Super-featherweight and Lightweight divisions respectively. Broner has fast hands, he is an offensive fighter and he has good power too. I have seen around 13 Broner fights and have seen how he has developed. At the beginning to the mid point of his career, Broner was too busy with his work. He threw lots of punches that missed and seemed obsessed with showing his speed and power as early as he could in a bout. He also had a defence that was quite traditional, with a hands high style. As his career has progressed, Broner has matured his style. He is an offensive fighter, but these days he is more controlled in his approach. Out has gone the wild swinging punches. He has shortened up his punches and punches less often but with more accuracy. He walks his opponent down these days and uses a more Philly style defence, with the left shoulder crouched, the elbow low and the right hand covering his face, akin to the style prefered by Mayweather.

A lot has been made of the supposed differences in style of Broner and Mayweather. I think Nazim Richardson got it about right, when he said that Mayweather was a defensive fighter with an exceptional offence, where as Broner was an offensive fighter with an exceptional defence. One of the criticisms of Broner's style has been the wide stance that he uses. This seems to be used primarily to create the leverage needed in his punches for power, but the stance makes it difficult for him to change position quickly, especially when moving backwards, ie, he is a little too static in the ring. Some would also point to the calibre of fighters that Broner has fought. Broner seems to have fought some tough but not exceptionally gifted fighters. For an example, Gamboa now operates at lightweight and Rios at light-welterweight and yet Broner hasn't stuck around to fight those guys or been intent on clearing out a division before moving up weight classes. Maybe he sees more lucrative pickings at the welterweight division assuming he comes through his bout with Malignaggi.

Having watched thirteen of his bouts, i think Broner was quite fortunate to get decision wins over Quintero and Ponce De Leon. Broner seems to struggle with fighters who counter-punch and move. He is a natural counter-puncher himself and likes his opponents to come to him. If he has to go looking for his opponent it makes it a more difficult fight for him, where as what he prefers is a fighter like Rees who can stand in front of, walk down and pot shot into submission. Another criticism of Broner is that he is a single shot fighter who doesn't put combinations together. This however seems to be linked with what has been suggested above, in that any opposition fighter who has some lateral movement and can throw two / three shot combinations, will reduce Broner to one punch pot shots. Broner seems to work best behind a busy jab and becomes more effective that way. So, there you have a short analysis of Adrien Broner. What do you honestly think ? Do you believe that he has the skill sets, plus the personality to be the next big thing in boxing ??

I think so too Jessi............

I think the out of ring antics are more theatre to the main attribute, which is his skill sets. Broner is exceptional.

Broner got rocked in sparring by Errol Spence. Might be a bit chinny. I'd like to see him in against a hard hitter. But he's only 23, he's got personality and can go far. But I think he might be found out at 147lb

Shane Mosley was saying that a jump up to 147lbs would be harder than Broner realises, though Paulie isn't a puncher. I heard about the "knock out" story and Broner denies it ever happenned, though these are sparring stories i suppose. Be interesting against someone like a Marcus Maidana.

This is the problem (no pun intended) when doing threads on fighters like Broner. It just descends into one sentance answers such as "He is a tw@t" etc and you don't get anything back for want of trying to start a thread............

It's why i don't post that often on here anymore :OhYes:

I think he will be for the next few years, but he is already losing it outside of the ring with all these videos of him doing ridiculous things I can see him just fighting for the sake of it in 10 years time like a lot of legends.

I think Paulie will win, unless it is a total stink job on the cards.

Too big a jump in weight and class IMO

If broner somehow stops him then I am prepared to reassess.

No. He'll be a star without a doubt but he'll never be "The Big Thing".

Broner really hasnt been tested yet and i really dont want to put my neck on the line to suggest that he is the next best thing... I know how you feel about alvarez quix..

however i will go out on a limb and say what i have seen his power seems to remove any obstacle so his need to movement is somewhat limited..if you look at rees he managed to catch Broner a few times before the power took rees out the match... like malanagi said he hasnt fought anyone like paulie.. so it wil be interesting to see whether broner starts to focus on his movement..

but i do enjoy watching him box... i think hes been treated a little unfairly due to the comparison to MW.. which really i dont know how as they look so different...

He gets compared to Mayweather because he makes the comparison himself, bumlicking him, trying to act like him and imitate his style.

Having watched him against Escabedo, Litzau, Di Marco and Rees (the last one of the three live on a stream). I was left thinking that Adrien Broner was something a little bit special. He has terrific handspeed and terrific power and you rarely see the two combined as usually you get one or the other with the majority of fighters and he was picking his shots against Rees very well and against Litzau he showed that he is a terrific finisher when he has his opponent in trouble. He is not someone that has a chililling one punch ko power but you know that he will score KO wins.

However at 23 years old and with 26 fights under his record he is still 2/3 years away from his peak as there are still questions about his chin and stamina should a fight that he is in goes into the Championship rounds and while his personality can be divisive it will generate interest as people who will tune to watch see if he knocks out or gets knocked out in the manner Prince Nassem was pretty divisive back in the 1990s along with Chris Eubank here in the UK. But he has got the tools to be something very special but time will give us the answer.

If broner says that he styles himself on MW then i find that little difficult to comprehend as i dont see any comparison in the 2 fighters styles.. Mw is slick and is difficult to hit ..while broner is a straight up infront with no much movement but a lot of power...

I think he has a pretty tight defence. All depends which Broner fights we are talking about. One of the problems with fighters like Broner who have some hype surrounding them is that they aren't allowed to make mistakes or god forbid get hit, otherwise it makes them a busted flush, etc etc.................

Yeah, it's about trying to judge what he will be like in the future going on what he has achieved up to now in his career. The Malignaggi fight will tell us quite a bit because of Paulie's movement, but i think that Broner will work him down. A come forward fighter like Hatton dealt pretty comfortably with Malignaggi, so i don't think this fight will be as tough as some are suggesting.

True..........

The comparison is primarily with the persona and to a degree Broner's defensive stance and his one punch pot shots that are quite similar to Mayweather's, but mentality wise and approach are completely different as you state.

He will lose in due course.

It almost happened against Ponce De Leon.

Lets see how he fares against a measuring stick like Paulie first. I think he's going to have his hands full.
