Post by stevedoc »

i was just looking up a fight i went to in 1987 and when i did i see that nigel benn was making his debut ,
i'm a little shocked that i don't remember him as i see the whole bill i think . i went to see a local fighter chris blake that night.
so has anyone else been to a show missed a boxer or great fight .....

Saw an early Calzaghe fight at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff, only really took notice as he`d boxed one of my friends in the amateurs

Like me at big fights I go to the bar until the big fight. Unless there is a notable name on the card. Saying that nigel looked awesome so I might have taken my seat for the fight, if I had known anythnig about him

Benn had torn up the amateurs winning the ABAs, I think he stopped most of the men he boxed and had beaten Rod Douglas who was brilliant; he was a red hot prospect from turning pro, Benn wasn't an anonymous fledgling pro. I remember watching Peter Gabbitus and Mark Ramsey and really thinking no one could box like them - they were fantastic, elegant and poised.

I missed Chad Dawson on the Calzaghe / Lacey undercard.

Still makes me laugh - I surprised an ex with tickets to the fight (as if she wanted to go) to get in the venue about 8pm to realise the arena was nearly empty and Calzaghe wasn't going to be in the ring til 3am.

I was in the dog house for a while after that one.

Yeh i remember Benn taking a full page advert out in the Boxing news after he beat Douglas and just prior to the Commonwealths cos the selecters picked Rod instead...always a great self publicist even back then our Nigel!! And yeh Palooka what a talented boxer Gabbitus was, if ever there was a "should have gone all the way" it was him. Ramsey looked the buisness along with his brother but ended up top end journeys i think? :TU:

Was it that late? I remember shi**ing myself having to drive back over the snake pass after that one. Pitch black, fog had descended and not another car in sight. Then I bashed out the fight report and went to another bill in Sheffield for noon on Sunday. Those were the days.

Bloody hell. That's gratitude innit. You take her to the fight that she wants to see, and she gets the hump about it.
