The last fight did something like half the buys Showtime expected and they lost money on the fight.
I think this fight is a reaction to that as it will certainly be big, just not as big as it would have been in 1 years.

It is a bout that they could rematch; Alvarez will push very hard and keep on trying; there's too much can happen to louse up a big bout by building too long - Gamboa v Lopez and Manny v Floyd come to mind immediately.

Yup, good point. Manny and Floyd was a total arse up and I blame Manny's steroid abuse for that anyway.

I have a preference for the long build to fights. I think it's the best way to get people interested.

Why is it important to you to build interest or for PPV numbers to be big?

Personally if a fight I want to see is made I couldn't care less about the build up, pre-fight selling or how many people turn up/tune in! As long as I am watching it, I'm happy

Sometimes the bouts are over promoted; there just aren't that many fantastic boxers with flair, style and excitement to make the big bouts up to expectation; often they get the big razzamattaz and the bout is underwhelming. It is great to watch the twinkly lights and the celebrities in the crowd but a lot of times we get an OK bout with the favourite winning. There are only so many bouts that can be billed 'fight of the decade' or 'fight of the century'.

It's all about how the fighters got there and why, and making people care.

I agree with the gist of your post but the reason the bout was held in Zaire was that Don King got Mobuto to finance everything; it weren't a charitable or principled thing; Mobuto practically bankrupt the country to put that bout on and the high rollers were there; there was a plane load of entertainers James Brown etc.

Taking the scalp of a big name when the fighters career is just about over doesnt really give you credibility. If Canelo does beat Mayweather, and I dont believe he will, some people will still say Mayweather was past his prime. Mayweather still has the fitness of a much younger fighter. He still has amazing skills and a near perfect defense and if Alvarez was to find that huge winning punch I believe he would get a lot more respect from those who think he hasnt been in the toughest fights. Its a big risk fight for both men but Canelo can come again, could Mayweather.

He hasn't got a prayer of beating Floyd in September, they should have held this fight off for another couple of years when Floyd has slipped a bit and Canelo has matured.

Thats how you make new stars, by beating the old stars, not by having the soon to be retired stars beating up and comers before they are ready.

They are wasting a massive opportunity by rushing Canelo into this fight.

Anyway.

I think canelo will soon be dead at the weight. he looks tired and drawn in there, his workrate is very low for a young star to be, and I doubt he makes 154 much longer. he should be up at middleweight by now, for his health. the so-called masterclass/domination over trout was worrying for me - he was doing nice moves and sharp punches but was gassing after every big minute of action he produced and was having to defend on the ropes (slipping nicely, ok) for long stretches.

but his biggest payday will be Floyd, an opportunity they probably don't want to slip away. and there are some hard bastards at middleweight who could maybe inflict some hurt on him. I reckon it'll be like Floyd-DLH and cotto, the opponent looking at times like he has the tools, but having nowhere near the stamina.
