If you are talking modern Marquis of Queensberry rules, its John L. Sullivan (1885). If you are talking modern bareknuckle, its English Champion James Figg (1719). If you are talking all the way back to the Olympics in Greece, the first recorded champion was Onamastus (688 BC).

onamastus had what many experts say is the greatest right hook of all time. i would tend to agree. if you watch him on film, he hits with unbeleivable power and strength

I don't know, I think Cleitomachus could have taken Onamastus. Not only was Cleitomachus the boxing champion, but was also the pancranium champion.

sherlock,

you have to study the tapes in this one. as you see in the picture above this post, of onamastus, you can clearly see that he was RIPPED. i have seen Cleitomachus fight several times, and i am really not all that impressed i think he was very susseptable to uppercuts, and i think onamastus would probly catch cleitomachus with a viscous uppercut in round 500.

i think if you really wanted to fight a challenge for cleomates, you would have to look at the often overlooked and underrated, cleomates was rumored to have even killed a man in the ring. he went psycho after a home town decision and killed a bunch of kids, but a prime cleomates was godlike, i see him taking onamastus out in 2.

Maybe I do overrate Cleito a little bit, I was a pal of his. We used to hit the town, hitting the town baths, carrying off women, looting the provinces...But you must have seen Cleito's left hook, it makes Joe Frazier look like a primadonna.

But neither Cleitomachus nor Onamastus could match Theagenes of Thrace. He makes both look like pre-pubecent little flowergirls.

i understand sherlock..its hard to get past these friendships when u are matching these great boxers up..without a doubt cleito was a great guy, i even got his autograph when i was really young

clearly... milos of croton is one of the most overrated wins of all time... his win against cleito was a hometown decision..even the gods got angry and zeus killed milos. which explains his death at age 18. poor poor milos
