All I'm saying is that a skilful boxer like Lynes was at his peak would have beaten Gavin. Witter at his peak would have toyed with Gavin. Brook would stop him very early. I hope his trainer and management team are not as blinkered as some on here.
But I'm not a Gavin hater - far form it - and I wish him all the best -but he is LIMITED. If I'm wrong and he goes on to reach world class then I'll come on here and admit I've got it horribly wrong. I hope he's enjoying his victory last night and I wouldn't want him to be disappointed in any way. He done what he had to do against an opponent who sent a telegram everytime he went to throw a punch. At the top level in the middle weight categories you have to be quick. Gavin's not. Sorry !!
No, mate, he appeared to send a telegram due to Gavin's superb footwork. We will see. I know you prefer aggressive face forward domestic fighters so I'm not surprised you don't rate Frankie...

I remember Tony Jeffries saying he's the most talented boxer he's been around and Tony Bellew said similar things. There's been others aswell who have said the same. His ability to anticipate what his opponent is going to throw and then counter is second to none.
I think the main reason he had/has a lot of doubters is because whenever anyone turns pro in a blaze of glory, people expect perfection when common sense really tells you its a work in progress, plus the fact that despite his KO ratio he isnt a massive puncher and a lot of casual fans see that your not blowing everyone away your not gonna get very far(although i,ll reittirate my opinions were based on a few mediocre performances) :TU:

The problem is that he's not fought often enough and seemed to get stuck at a level without really shining. I can appreciate that some posters get to see what he does in sparring and get the gossip from insiders but for most of us we just get to see the bouts. The insider talk etc wasn't backed up by very strong performances; last night he put in a strong performance; messy and untidy but strong. Vassell is not a pushover and came to win. Frankie looks to have grown into the weight and I do think that he'd beat Matthew Hatton and Brook, who is very heavy handed but predictable.

Those are valid points. I think the diffence between him and some of the other prospects though aswell is you get the feeling watching him at times that he doesnt believe in himself always. You watch guys like Degale and Groves and they seem very self assured of their abilities, etc. I think Frankie doubts himself and then is fighting with a lot of nervous energy and you dont always see the best of him! He's looked better since being with his amateur coach in that regard though

Yeah mate although Gavins never came across as cocksure/arrogant/big headed/ or whatever you wanna call it as Degale etc i never knew how little self belief in himself he had in his own ability until ringside after last nights fight,if that is the case hopefully taking the scalp of a good unbeaten champ in Vassell makes him realise he has got the tools to go far in this game

Yeah ive seen other interviews where he's said similar things and his trainer said that Frankie had always been a bit like that in an interview i saw and how being back with him and helped him as he's obviously trained Frankie since he was a kid.

In terms of pure boxing ability I don't think there is anyone better in the country than Frankie Gavin, but other factors are needed to be world class, like a solid chin, fitness, dedication, Gavin is proving he has these fight by fight.

Tom Chaney has to take a lot of credit for Gavin turning things around after Woodhouse and the Horta pullout, he's settled him down and has the gameplan sorted, the comment about Gavin being one dimensional, I don't think he is or looked like it last night, but if he appeared that way it will be down to the gameplan. Before the Welborn fight Chaney said they had to cut Frankie down to 3 or 4 punches for the Witter fight because he's so awkward, the same will have happened last night, punches will have been taken away to leave the ones that work, obviously not as many as the Witter fight but there were shots that I've seen before from Gavin that weren't on show last night.

To be fair though, there's a lot of fighters you could say are one dimensional! It's just about being very good at that one dimension

Frankie displays footwork not seen on many boxers anymore not even at the very highest level.

Footwork of that excellence will take him a long way in the game at the moment, power or not.

ive criticised gavin in the past on his weight and discipline issues. he still doesnt look like a top class pro in terms of physique, but he has obviously improved , as he was strong enough and fit enough to wrestle, and boss, a very strong opponent.

he fought a great fight. he did his work on the outside , and spoiled, wrestled, gored, on the inside, never letting vassell get a foothold.. he beat an unbeaten ,strong, fit and quite skilled fighter, and never really struggled at all.
he did get away with persistent and illegal use of the head, and the ref shouldve pulled him up, but i dont think it geatly affected the fight.

i still think there is plenty of room for improvement , but he looks like hes still on the right track.

dont think hes shown that he could beat brook though.
