I recall reading somewhere that when Braddock beat Corn Griffin it was this big upset because Griffin was this young undefeated prospect. According to boxrec though, he was not unbeaten when he fought Braddock.

I saw the documentary about Braddock and they talked about Corn Griffin. They didn't say what his record was but they talked about him as if he were a big deal and what an upset it was that Braddock knocked him out. When you go back and look at his record you find out different. I think that they embellished Griffin's credentials because they thought it would make a better story.

Corn was given a huge build up based on a string of tank town wins in the South and how impressive he had looked as a sparring partner for either Baer o Carnera, I don't recollect which of the two.
Corn G was not a top contender but was regarded as a hot prospect in the division and the win put Braddock in the limelight once again.

yeah wether or not its a case of corn being the number one contender at the time or the movie flashing its poetic license griffin obviously had enough of a name to propell a man going nowhere into the shakeup.enrique wrote:Corn was given a huge build up based on a string of tank town wins in the South and how impressive he had looked as a sparring partner for either Baer o Carnera, I don't recollect which of the two.

a win over him must have carried some kudos at least.

well i think it is an upset no matter what because of braddocks state. yes corn was clearly exaggerated as a fighter, but most of it came from his camp because as a sparring partner for carnera before the baer fight, he dominated and really made a name for himself. reports were often more interested in him then carnera and all his accomplishments were documented.
According to boxrec, Griffin was 7-3-1 with one No Contest when he fought Braddock. He had a win over Ted Sandwina, another over Battling Bozo, and one over Buck Everett, which Everett later avenged. Hardly the stuff of legend. Braddock would have to be declared legally dead for a win over Griffin to be considered an upset.

ok here we go. noone called him a legend. he was a young fighter who made a great impression on people. his record didnt matter, he was stilll young and he did have talent. he proved htat he had talent and the carnera camp.
this is an upset because of braddock more then because of corn griffin. braddock fought the fight one barely 2 weeks notice, was much older, hadnt fought in almost a year. braddock didnt even train for the fight! he fought the fight so he could put some food on the table. but unbeknownst to braddock, his right hand finally healed and he was able to punch again. and he found how to use his left more effective. the fight was an upset. period.

Here's a thought. Did anyone ever check Griffin's record in the amatoors? Maybe he shined in the simon-pures and still carried that rep into the pros. Can't believe any gym work is going to make him a favourite with anybody, though Braddock wasn't considered much any more. The year immediately before the Griffin fight he was 4-4 with one knockout against Al Stillman who decisioned him in a rematch 2 months later. The win over Les Kennedy was probably a bigger upset.
