Anthony Crolla, what a result
I just thought I might start a thread since Ant appears to be getting no credit here. It seems to be more of a moanathon about McDonald and McCrory.
Let's get this straight, Ant looked on his way to being a mere domestic contender (not even a winning one), but has now beaten top prospect Farrell, got a draw against Mathews (when he should have won) and just beaten a man who was European champ and mandatory contender for Broner's title a few months ago.
Superb win against a man who 80% at least here thought would smash him. Plus you couldn't meet a nicer fella either.
Also it shows that Joe Gallagher can actually get his fighters to employ more than one set of tactics

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Well done to him. I thought he should have lost his last two fights though.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I wouldn't say Farrell was a top prospect and I thought Rees won pretty clearly, but that was the best I've seen him fight, so he's definitely improved but he should be kept well away from Burns.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
He should rematch Rees or fight Mitchell next, but he shouldn't get the Burns fight.

Farrell was a top prospect, and Ant had basically been lined up as a contender on the slide.
Also Rees was seen as good enough for Broner last time out. Crolla beats him and now we have to keep Crolla away from the monster that is Ricky Burns, like it is a danger to his health?
Come on mate, with all due respect that sounds ridiculous.
Burns would be favourite, a big one...but this is hardly a mismatch that should be prevented

My bad...but he was a European champion and ex world champion...let's not try to downplay the victorybilly nelson wrote:Gavin Rees wasn't mandatory for Broner matethepocketrocket wrote:I just thought I might start a thread since Ant appears to be getting no credit here. I'm a fan of Ricky but, similar to Cleverly, he's not a world champion who has fought everyone there is and proven himself that way. I take nothing away from his title, he's certainly one of the top men in the division; but equally he could face a Vasquez and come up well short, so I personally would be interested in seeing him & Crolla, even though I'd expect Ricky to win fairly comfortably.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I for one thought Crolla won last night and also beat Matthews last time out. Comes across well outside the ring also. I certainly wouldn't begrudge him his big chance, however I think it's about time Burns fought a real contender/champion if he wants to call himself world champion. So for that reason I don't want them to fight.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
well said. I was well pissed off last night. the round by round was so frustrating because I was reading more about rees than crolla, and more about jim watt than rees, and more about glenn mccrory than watt.thepocketrocket wrote:I just thought I might start a thread since Ant appears to be getting no credit here. domestically Anthony crolla has kind of done a barrera - who was easy to hit by jr jones and unable to see the finish line (crolla v derry 1), then tightened up coming close to beating jones (crolla D12 derry), then had brilliant results that put jr jones (who lost to morales) way behind him vs morales and naz (W12 rees).
crolla has improved, he's come through ups and downs, he's seemed to've gained a more balanced style. one thing has remained consistent: he's in outstanding battles, at very least once, sometimes twice every year. L10 sykes, TKO7 morris, TKO9 Watson, LTKO6 dirty derry, W10 Farrell, D12 derry, W12 rees! 7 domestic fight of the year candidates, in less than 3 years - you mardy fvckers.
losing in prize fighter and then beating the guy who's pretty much the boss man of European lightweights. crolla'd be the UK's most improved fighter this year were it not for Jamie McDonnell winning the IBF bantam title. the hard times didn't ruin crolla, he's still here and he's producing in the strongest era for british lightweights that I've lived through.

Excellent post
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
in an interview joe Gallagher said they'd noticed rees likes to counter his opponents jabs with the right hand, so they reduced the number of jabs thrown by crolla - so as not to give anything away to rees. who let's face it, is a crafty and hard little bugger who loves to steal those openings and do damage in the early going.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Because he has lost to Mathews and Sykes in the last 15 months. He'd be an awful opponent for Burns.MachoMan09 wrote:I haven't read any good arguments as to why Crolla should not get a match with Burns.

Not really. I think Burns would beat Crolla easily.MachoMan09 wrote:You don't think their styles would make for a decent contest?

I don't know much about Beltran, I'll have to watch some videos of him.MachoMan09 wrote:What is your prediction for Burns vs Beltran?
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
To be honest, though I like Crolla, his style and willingness to box anyone and his fitness etc; there are other people who have plugged away at a higher level for longer without slipping up. Anthony comes across marvelous but has a cats chance in hell of beating Burns and hasn't forced his way to the table; he's being mentioned through convenience and that's it. Nice man that he is, that doesn't mean he 'deserves' a 100 grand or whatever payday and a crack at Burns while someone else, less known in Britain waits around scratching their arse another 6 months.MachoMan09 wrote:I haven't read any good arguments as to why Crolla should not get a match with Burns.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Put Crolla in with Mitchell and the winner gets Burns then. Im pretty sure Mitchell would beat Crolla.Autobarn wrote:well said. I'd pick Mitchell to beat Crolla as well, but Mitchell shouldn't get another shot at Burns anytime soon.columbo wrote:Put Crolla in with Mitchell and the winner gets Burns then. Im pretty sure Mitchell would beat Crolla.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Why on earth would you have a problem with Crolla fighting Burns, but then suggest that the winner of Mitchell v Crolla gets the shot?
The same Mitchell who got battered by burns already? Why would you rather see that.
