Anthony Crolla, what a result
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
crolla just beat rees, ranked #6 contender in ring mag's world top 10 lightweights.
stop being negative.
once upon a time, there was this octopus guy with tattoos all over, fit guy but a bit outgunned vs the best of british, got manhandled in the European title fight and repeatedly decked in the british title fight. the guy, from Scotland, a fit enough guy, a tough guy, who throws very wide punches, etc etc, had "no chance" to beat a Puerto rican, strongest puncher at 130-pounds, name of Martinez...
now the tattooed guy, who got his big chance, doesn't throw so many wide shots any more, though sometimes still a bit awkward-looking, has world titles in 2 weights, just beat a supremely talented and tricky mando, & 4 other guys rated in the world top 10 by the big American magazine...yep, this is ricky burns, soundly beaten for british, commeonwealth & European titles (though he did get the c'wealth belt later, vs a shot gomez).
cheer up everyone, appreciate crolla, he's never made massive claims, and is still in a state of improvement. he's faced a very nice range of opponents between 130 and 135, he's had ups and downs yet he's come through a better fighter. was last night his peak or will he keep moving up? none of us know at the moment, so calm down a bit.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I dont want to see Mitchell fight Burns again but to me there's little difference between that fight and Crolla vs Burns. I also think Mitchell would beat Crolla. Thats my point really.DMA1987 wrote:Why on earth would you have a problem with Crolla fighting Burns, but then suggest that the winner of Mitchell v Crolla gets the shot?
The same Mitchell who got battered by burns already? Why would you rather see that.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Though the Uk lightweight scene is fantastic the wider World level has other boxers, no less accomplished who have paid heir dues and want their chance. Because we have a good UK champ it doesn't mean every other challenge ought to be from the UK, regardless of the strength of the challenge.DMA1987 wrote:Why on earth would you have a problem with Crolla fighting Burns, but then suggest that the winner of Mitchell v Crolla gets the shot?

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I hope he does keep on improving as he is a credit to the sport, I do not think though that he ought to box Burns, he will not win and he may get ruined. I'd like to see him continue to improve and stake a solid claim to a shot.Autobarn wrote:crolla just beat rees, ranked #6 contender in ring mag's world top 10 lightweights.

(I'd like Gary Sykes to do well also - another fantastic boxer and a credit to boxing).
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
how about crolla-sykes 3 and crolla-matthews 3?
crolla usually gets hard fights for not so great rewards - something that can make a fighter fed up/stale, or can make a man stronger.
could these opponents be brought in and, perhaps, a European title fight be negotiated?
is there a current EBU holder at 135?
Jamie macca won the C'wealth, European and british, he did the big 3 in style, in hard, hard fights, before the world title, which he won. these belts, especially vs tough, varied foes, can get you ready.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Would I like to see Burns v Crolla? Yes and no. Would be a big step up that I would be excited to watch for the Crolla fan in me, but at the same time my ricky burns fan would be disappointed that Ricky isn't out unifying things and honestly playing with bigger boys.
I would rather see Crolla fight Mitchell, I think he would beat him and catch up on a lot of the credit he hasn't received for beating Rees.
I mean, after beating Rees, Crolla would have to be favourite against Mitchell, who frankly is as overrated as Crolla is under. Just found it curious that Crolla isn't good enough for burns but Mitchell v Burns 2 would be apparently passable to some people.

Who? With all the excuses in the world Burns did Mitchell in and I lost £20 on it; how on earth can Kevin get back in there? Peggy Mitchell maybe...

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
It's not that it's passable. It's just that Crolla has had two back to back very close decisions. One a win in his favour and one a draw against Derry Matthews who hasnt proven himself above domestic level. Actually he fought a european title fight and got stopped. I just think a Crolla vs Mitchell fight would be more fitting. If Crolla beats Mitchell then you can say he has legit argument for a shot at Burns.DMA1987 wrote:Would I like to see Burns v Crolla? Because Mitchell is better in almost every way.DMA1987 wrote:Why?Horse wrote:Mitchell would be favourite against Crolla.DMA1987 wrote:I mean, after beating Rees, Crolla would have to be favourite against Mitchell, who frankly is as overrated as Crolla is under. I dont agree with you on a lot of things Horse but that I do. I think Mitchell is a better boxer and he definietly hits harder. He's got a suspect chin but I dont think Crolla hits hard enough to trouble him.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
correct me if i'm wrong, but I see Mitchell as a guy who's had opportunities, who probably doesn't want to move down, in the risky fights. he was never able to agree terms with rees, was he?
crolla, old fashioned fighter, not in a position to play hardball or negotiate himself out of fights, just gets on with it, fights these hard, intense, mostly long distance fights.
Mitchell, talented though he is, I doubt would be up for crolla, maybe not even ready.
crolla's had the british title. i'd like to see him get the commonwealth, then the European, and see what kind of punishing machine he can develop into.

Then I'd bet heavily on Mitchell and probably make a good amount of money.DMA1987 wrote:He wouldn't be favourite, I'm almost certain.Horse wrote:Because Mitchell is better in almost every way.

I like you Horse, I don't want to see you broke. Save the gambling money, buy yourself some spectacles.Horse wrote:Then I'd bet heavily on Mitchell and probably make a good amount of money.DMA1987 wrote:He wouldn't be favourite, I'm almost certain.Horse wrote:Because Mitchell is better in almost every way.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I'd never bet more than I could afford to lose.DMA1987 wrote:I like you Horse, I don't want to see you broke. Save the gambling money, buy yourself some spectacles.
I would have picked both Mitchell and Murray to beat Rees and I feel the same way about Crolla. He doesn't have much power and he has a poor workrate.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Kevin boxes next week, lets see how he gets on before we bury him; at his best he's very good, when he can't be arsed he's not all that good.
Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
Rees would murder Murray, even pre Mitchell.Horse wrote:I'd never bet more than I could afford to lose.DMA1987 wrote:I like you Horse, I don't want to see you broke. Save the gambling money, buy yourself some spectacles.

I would love to see the Mitchell v Crolla fight made. I think it would be a good fight but I also think it would change your opinion. And remember, Burns isnt known for his power, but he battered Mitchell.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I'm not sure. murray's not as technical as crolla. but he's a lot stronger and might've been the man to take gavin out of there during the final third fade. of course murray could well have eaten punishment and been marked up in the early going.DMA1987 wrote:Rees would murder Murray, even pre Mitchell.Horse wrote:I'd never bet more than I could afford to lose.DMA1987 wrote:I like you Horse, I don't want to see you broke. Have always been quite sure of it being the latter. Just never imagined in going into the final quarter.Autobarn wrote: I'm not sure. murray's not as technical as crolla. but he's a lot stronger and might've been the man to take gavin out of there during the final third fade. of course murray could well have eaten punishment and been marked up in the early going.

Re: Anthony Crolla, what a result
I'd like Rees to get a rest and then have a go at Mitchell - what a bout that would be.
