I was really happy for Johnson when he beat Jones. I was never a Jones fan so wasn't sad.gilgamesh wrote:I always thought Roy Jones Jr. vs Glen Johnson was a paradox. It was both a sad event to see and a joyous one to see at the same time. Roy Jones had just been stopped by Antonio Tarver in the rematch coming in, I personally thought he won the 1st round of that bout before getting caught and dropped, so the thought was there in a lot of people's minds I'm sure, as well as mine that he just an off moment and got caught. Well just 4 short months later he fights Glen Johnson, a tough journeyman known for getting jobbed in the other guy's hometown but never seen as anywhere near the level of the Roy Jones' of the world.
Well most of you know the story, this time Roy doesn't just get caught, he loses round after round to Glen Johnson and just looks like he simply doesn't want to be there anymore. Not to mention that aside from the one-sided nature of the fight it was also a particularly brutal KO where you knew Roy Jones was never going to be Roy Jones again.
On the other side of the coin of course it was a pleasure to see a hard luck tough guy have his moment in the Sun after such a rough path through the sport, and when he followed it up 3 months later with the victory over Tarver it just made the storybook year Johnson had all that much better.
.....I've seen a number of sad fights over the years, but seeing as how I just looked back on this one recently it was fresh in my mind.
The toughest fights for me personally to watch was Pacquiao-Morales III as I adored Morales, Morales-Garcia II was slightly easier to deal with because I had already written him off before so I was very proud that he was even able to come back enough to get that opportunity again. I hope he goes out with a decent win down in Mexico.
And JLC-Corrales I was a real heartbreaker for me, I was a huge Castillo fan and had told everyone he was going to KO Corrales in Round 10, and when he came so close to making my prediction come true only to be stopped on his feet moments later...it was like a punch in the gut. I've never had that reaction watching a fight before. I went from being so over the moon happy that JLC had this thing wrapped up and he just needed to put down Corrales one more time which he was surely going to do, then he was stopped and I just couldn't believe my eyes. From the joy of certain victory to the agony of crushing defeat in the blink of an eye. I've never been able to fully appreciate that fight because of the personal heartbreak it was for me.

It was gruesome. They showed some "highlights" on the documentary Assault in the Ring.palooka wrote:Not seen it, just read about it.RAPIDFIRE wrote:Billy Collins

I flew over to Vegas for the Duran/Joppy travesty. To see my 48 year old idol thrown in against a young champion by Don King to pay off another IRS tax bill was sad. 2000 of us disciples all knew how it was gonna end, you could have heard a pin drop such was the silence in that pokey little theatre in the Hilton, just made you reflect on the days past and now we had reached the end.

That was indeed sad, though Duran had beaten Castro so was a qualified challenger, showing his greatness even at that age.duranimal wrote:I flew over to Vegas for the Duran/Joppy travesty. Ali-Spinks I. Even though he won rematch the loss was really the end of Ali era.
Re: which fight did you find sad
One of my favourite photos in all of boxing was at the end of Eubank/Benn 1, seconds after the moment when Richard Steele stopped the fight.
Eubank standing in the middle of the ring, head back, screaming to the sky in jubliation.
Benn being held by Richard Steele. The TV footage showed that Benn actually put his head on Steele's shoulder and cried his eyes out.
It was a great fight and a great photo but I did feel sorry for Nigel Benn because he'd given his all but it wasn't quite enough.

I was never a Jones fan either, but still to see "Superman" come crashing down to Earth so quickly and brutally was definitely a bit sad to see. If only for the reminder that time waits for no man.Rover wrote:I was really happy for Johnson when he beat Jones. Breland v Honeyghan, it just wasn't there that night for Lloyd, and the crowd shouting 'What a load of rubbish' at the end was pitiful.

First time round against Tim Witherspoon was really upsetting, seeing him do well then get blitzed in the corner in the 11th. After that I expected him to get KOd against Tyson and Lewis, his second effort against Tyson was really disappointing, Frank never turned up at all for thatmacaca wrote:Brunos pastings in his world championship fights, I was young and expected more
