Jamie Cox is back in the mix. The former Commonwealth light middleweight champion has recovered from a horrible hand injury and is desperate to re-establish himself as one of Britain’s best at 154lbs. The unbeaten 26 year old, who has a record of 17-0 (9), returned from a 21 month layoff last month and is raring to go again.

“I wanna fight the big fights,” Cox told Livefight. “If that ain’t gonna happen, I’ll have to get a mandatory position where they can’t avoid me but I’m one of the best in the country. Erick [Ochieng], Liam [Smith] and Brian [Rose] are up there too so let’s just throw it about and have some good fights.”

The light middleweight scene has moved on while Cox has been away. Three months after he outlasted then unbeaten Ghanaian Obodai Sai in defence of his Commonwealth strap, Brian Rose won the British title. Since then, the man from Blackpool has claimed the belt for good and departed the domestic scene and Erick Ochieng and Liam Smith will contest the now vacant belt later this year. Eager to make up for lost time, southpaw Cox would happily step right in with the man at the top of the British rankings.

“I know he [Rose] said I’ve gotta earn my respect but I reckon I’ve boxed people just as good as he has, like Sai,” Cox sad. “The only reason I was away was because of the hand injury, I didn’t want to be out of boxing, or I’d have had just as many fights as he has.

“When he says ‘You’ve gotta earn your respect’ well, no. I just wanna fight the best people. I’m not saying I’m world champion, I can’t be arsed to fight these little fights. I just want the big ones.

“Obviously I respect Brian, I respect all the fighters in my weight division, I just wanna fight the best and become a champion. I think I could beat him now because he’s defensive minded first and he has no power. Obviously I’m a good attacking fighter and have good energy. I think for the full twelve rounds I’d be giving him a lesson really. I don’t think he wants the fight anyway. I don’t think he wants to fight me.

“I’d fight any of those two [Ochieng or Smith] as well. I’d fight any of them. At the end of the day, I just wanna fight the best people. I’ve got people who would put more money into the fight if they want more money.”

Having risen to prominence under the watchful eye of allegedly, Cox has now teamed up with local promoter PJ Rowson. The move ensures that he will be able to grab any opportunity that comes his way, no matter how late the call comes.

“I’m promoted by PJ Rowson and trained by Tony Borg now. I’ve known PJ for a number of years and I just decided to work with him for a bit and see what we can do. I always stay fit. I only had a week off after the fight and I’m back in training. “Anyone who wants to fight, if I have to go down that route and take something on a weeks notice I ain’t bothered.

“I’ll be ready in case anybody tries and pulls some tricks on me. This is the boxing game and anything can happen but if they try and mess me about, I’ll be ready for anyone.”

The enforced layoff has worked against Cox in more ways than one. His narrow – but unanimous – victory over Sai was marred by a series of low blows and followed by accusations of Cox being a dirty, overrated fighter. Had he escaped from the fight unscathed, Cox could have immediately set about silencing his critics. As it is, he has been forced to sit idle whilst his star and profile have fallen. As well as chasing the big fights, Cox now seems determined to change some minds.

“I broke my hand in the fight. I didn’t say anything at the end of the fight but it was bad. It’s taken ages to get right and numerous operations. According to allegedly, it’s the worst hand he’s seen in boxing. That shows how bad it was. I wasn’t gonna moan though, you’ve gotta move on and try and do the best with what you’ve got. Sai’s a good fighter I think.

“One thing about me is that I always give 100% when I’m in there. It takes a good man to beat me. I give 100% every time I fight because I give 100% in training. I live right, I eat right and train right. That’s what gives me confidence when I go in there.

“Sometimes your personality doesn’t come out when you’re in there [the ring] because it changes you a bit. I’ve known some guys go into the ring you’d think they were crazy but outside they’re really quiet and polite. Boxing’s a funny game and it brings out the worst in you sometimes but one thing I always do is try and give 100%. I ain’t scared of anybody so let’s make it happen.”

Ye I here you & understand your view but Sai did his fair share of dirty work Jamie sustained two nasty cuts from an elbow. The spud snatching did look herendous & was herendous no doubt but bare in mind Sai's head was as hard as stone his head is like a king conker Jamie did what he could with a shattered hand as I've said before most would have quit. We have our job to do & the ref has his job to do. Mark Green is a nice fella he did what he felt was right on the night. Jamie did himself no favours in the post fight interview but again bare in mind he made no excuses about his hand that tells you a lot about the man. I would like to see Jamie fight Sai again because I know Jamie would be a lot better next time around.

Seems like a fair tactic in a fight - if you hurt your hands punching your opponent in the head, just start hitting him somewhere softer - like his knackers !

I'd do it no problem, probably before I tried to hit em in the head. (I'm not a professional sportsman though in a televised and refereed fight in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers :) )

Ps - for the record, I do not think that Cox or any other boxer is "scared" of another boxer - it is just annoying how you continue to defend the performance and result of the Sai fight. If the tables had been turned you would have been crying out for a rematch.

Ask 1,000 people what they thought and 999 would say that Cox should have been disqualified and if not, Sai clearly won the fight (in case you hadn't guesssed, the one person disagreeing would have been you )

Cox gets a lot of unnecessary stick in my opinion, have always liked his style - back to when he lost to Michael Grant in the 2005 64kg ABA final in a cracker.

He's usually good to watch - his eight rounder with Mark Lloyd in Wolverhampton was a great undercard fight, and demonstrated both Cox's good and bad points.

I would love to see him square of with Joe Selkirk.
