Tom Doran quit pro game? Why?

Re: Tom Doran quit pro game? Why?
Completley understand weight making and how it works in pro game mate, he was nowhere near ripped for an on the night weight in. I dont know him day to day, wondered if you did hence the comment. Looking at him last night id say he could lose 7lbs in weight with proper training. Then i guess its whether his team can take the last stone off, it'd only be a stone if he were in a title fight too. Seeing him last night his trainer said he'd go back light middle, personally id say middle, and i dont think hed overly struggle with those 8lbs. Weight in boxing is a science.spudder56 wrote:Dangerous to take that sort of weight off mate middleweight will take some making but it's more realistic IMOWales wrote:So one of his trainers said. Looking at him id say middle is far more realistic, especially as he was struggling to make LMW before his break.
Whats your basis on him fooling himself?

PLEASE ALSO NOTE Tom donated his whole purse last night to the charity the event was supporting, Ameilias charity, help get a little girl the medical support she needs.
Fair played.

Is that the Amelia-Mae fundraising mate? A couple of my mates are currently running 10 marathons in 6 days for her
Re: Tom Doran quit pro game? Why?
Im doubting myself now youve posted whether i heard he was donating to that cause or i read it on your facebook that your mates were, but i think it was that cause mate, yes. If not amelia it was another little girl.billy bessey wrote:Wales wrote:![]()

Either way, to give all his purse to a worthy cause is a rarity.

Re: Tom Doran quit pro game? Why?
Why on earth would someone fight unlicensed if they are still enthused by the sport and capable of being licensed?
If he's just stopped boxing because he's fallen out of love with it, then that's understandable, but then he wouldn't box unlicensed if that was the case.
If he's ticking over while he deals with something else and aiming to pick things up again later, he could keep in shape and box regularly with 6-rounders against journeymen. So what gives?

Some boxers can earn more in unlicensed .
When youve got pros walking away with £200 from a pro fight having sold 50 tickets which for a pro isnt deemed enough tickets .
Put him on an unlicensed show and thats suddenly £500 .
Thats not all guestimates either , thats fact .
If the same boxer sold 200 tickets in a pro fight he would be getting £1400 , on unlicensed its £2000 .
Money is what motivates some people .
Those descent up coming novice pros can definately earn more as unlicensed boxers , Doran probably realised this too .
Re: Tom Doran quit pro game? Why?
Shame if he doesn't come back, he was exciting although he got lucky in the Maxwell fight.

Also, it keeps his hand in.MachoMan09 wrote:No bureaucratic hassle. Turn up with your gumshield and away you go. No forms, no medical, no scan, no effing about.
Both for himself (a fight helps with motivation to train rather than just sparring) and also with the people he sells tickets to, to keep them interested.
Not to mention, if the worst happens and he loses it does not go on his pro record so deosn't really "exist".
Good idea - win / win.

Fair enough, and obviously that's your line of business, but for someone with a high talent level and big ambitions, isn't that approach pretty short-sighted? Looking in the long term, Doran's wider career would have been better served with licensed bouts. He may not have made as much per night, but if he kept winning then he would end up making more overall in the end, especially if he got to title level.damianhucker1 wrote:oliverfennell wrote:Why on earth would someone fight unlicensed if they are still enthused by the sport and capable of being licensed?

I admittedly dont know much about the business side of boxing so im curious.... if you're an olympian or of similar ilk can you get away with not being a big ticket seller? The reason I ask is are guys like James Degale big ticket sellers? It's never really struck me as being the case but I could be wrong.damianhucker1 wrote:oliverfennell wrote:Why on earth would someone fight unlicensed if they are still enthused by the sport and capable of being licensed?

I know a guy fighting tonight who is on a grand for doing 100 tickets. He would have nearly spent that on medicals, etc. He has no amateur expetience and its not even a boxing show! It's Muay Thai/Kickboxing/K1 but they stuck him on too as he can sell tickets! It's a sell out and covered in the local press!

Yes i agree but not everyone can get to title level and not everyone will have the belief that they can or various other reasons can be a factor , Familly or work meaning lack of being able to commit to train enough for example .oliverfennell wrote:Fair enough, and obviously that's your line of business, but for someone with a high talent level and big ambitions, isn't that approach pretty short-sighted? Personally i think being a pro should be what all boxers aspire to regardless of the route they take to get there

An olympian wouldnt really need to be a ticket seller as the fact they are an olympian would be a draw in itself and the promoter would also know they have the pedigree to go fairly far and therfor chances are they would recover their outlay .

100 tickets = a grand .
Same as it is on my shows , and probably the vast majority .

Exactly. People go on about "he doesn't sell enough tickets" as a justification for not matching them a certain way, but I've been to loads of boxing shows where I bought tickets on the door or online.damianhucker1 wrote:An olympian wouldnt really need to be a ticket seller as the fact they are an olympian would be a draw in itself and the promoter would also know they have the pedigree to go fairly far and therfor chances are they would recover their outlay .
Classic example, people used to justify Hatton not fighting Witter by saying Witter "doesn't sell any tickets". Yet at his fight with Corley, there were about 2,000 fans. They didn't all buy tickets personally from any of the boxers, obviously, yet it was a decent crowd drawn to a decent match on its on merits.

Darren Barker and Kreshni Quato are big sellers fighting in North London! Hardly anyone, except from the likes of us, would have gone down to support the match on the night.oliverfennell wrote:Exactly. And I wonder how many tickets the likes of Tony Pep etcfought to justify the Hatton fight?
