We don't have it, the referee fucked up big time. Most South American countries have it though.

It was a deliberate fornicate up, he didn't want to be the one to wave off Price in Liverpool so gaveiamasadlittleboy wrote:We don't have it, the referee fucked up big time. Most South American countries have it though.
him every chance to recover - don't blame him to be honest.
Re: standing count in pro boxing
If the referee thinks a fighter is being held up by the ropes then they can give them a count.
Re: standing count in pro boxing
As daft as it was it certainly left no room for doubt. A blessing really.

That's a "mandatory" 8 not a "standing" 8Horse wrote:If the referee thinks a fighter is being held up by the ropes then they can give them a count.

Yes Price was given a mandatory 8 not a standing 8. Whether that was right or not.... well!?!?!iamasadlittleboy wrote:That's a "mandatory" 8 not a "standing" 8Horse wrote:If the referee thinks a fighter is being held up by the ropes then they can give them a count.

Not right within the rules but the right thing for the circumstances.

The ref was a disgrace, Price was cowering over the damn ropes, surely anyone would have stopped the fight. It was a good job Tony Wilson's mum wasn't sat at ringside!

I think the ref was trying to give Price as much help as he could to ride out the storm being that it was at home, fighting in front of a few thousand scousers. Kind of reminded me of when Terry O'Connor let Khan carry on after Prescott knocked him down. A stiff breeze would have had him over let alone another punch.

Why dont you blame him?? Its the most deliberate tyoe of favouritism us brittish boxing, if that was thompson in the recieving end you can bet you last £ it would have been stopped! Khan v Prescot was the same
No wonder some of the refereeing in the uk is the joke of the boxing world

Thank goodness at least one of you know the rules!!! For the others who always have negative things to say " go and learn before having a go FFS"Horse wrote:If the referee thinks a fighter is being held up by the ropes then they can give them a count.

He wasn't being held up by the ropes, he was leaning over the ropes in a situation that deserved a stoppage.taffytoon wrote:Thank goodness at least one of you know the rules!!! If that is "being held up be the ropes" and deserves to be regarded as so then we have very different opinions, that is a man who needs to be stopped not, given a count.
If it was the other way around WOULD the referee have given Thompson a count?

I suppose technically if the ropes wernt there he would have gone over so even though he was hunched over them they may have been supporting Price. I doubt very much Marcus will have anything to answer for. The most impotant thing was that David was spared any more un due punishment.

Exactly, it was a tranparently bias piece of referreeing where he just made the rules up as he went along. In what other sport do you see it as obvious as that? The only thing i can think of is in football when a ref knows he made a mistake then tries to make up for it. In the confed cup Italy scored against Brazil but the ref already blew the whistle for a penalty. Then just changed his mind and though, ah heck, ill just award the goal. That ref was sent home after that 1. It's time ref's are held to higher standards.
Re: standing count in pro boxing
It should have been stopped imo. The mandatory 8 count wasn't needed and shouldn't have been used in that situation. The ref did try and give every chance to Price to continue. With that being said. I give the ref credit.
If Price was fighting for a different promoter, with a different ref (naming no names). It would have been stopped after Tony got up on the 9 count.
Not many complaints about the ref from me. The best man won at the end of the day.

You and Taffytoon are correct. However, I'm not surprised given that you two know the rules inside outThe Insider wrote:I suppose technically if the ropes wernt there he would have gone over so even though he was hunched over them they may have been supporting Price. Marcus will definitely not have anything to answer for.
Re: standing count in pro boxing
Wladimir was given an eight count in exactly the same situation vs Brewster

The boards rules are VERY much contradictory however.Dead Mouse wrote:It’s called a judgement call, and is perfectly permissible according to BBBoC rules as the ref can decide that the ‘Boxer is supported on the ropes of the boxing ring and, in the opinion of the Referee, is unable to defend himself’. The rules are right there for anyone to read on the Board’s website, why not just check them out? Did the referee stop and grandly declare that: “I, the ref, am about to deliver a standing count, as opposed to a mandatory one’? Nah, he decided that the ropes were holding Price up, stepped in to count, presumably so he could do something mental such as looking into his eyes and seeing if he could continue, and then waved it off. I don’t always agree with British refs, but this wasn’t an illegal move as it was fought under the Board’s rules.
Here’s a link to the BBBoC’s domumention. Click ‘download’ and you can actually read the stuff. Although understanding is an entirely different matter:
http://www.bbbofc.com/documentation
The rule in this case (3.32.1 c)
when a Boxer is supported on the ropes of the boxing ring and, in the opinion of the Referee, is unable to defend himself
Goes against rule 3.28
Boxers must shake hands before the commencement of the Contest and at the beginning of the final round and must defend themselves at all times during the Contest.

It's not really is it. If you don't do what's required in reg 3.28 you'll get stopped or recieve a count as a consequence.iamasadlittleboy wrote:

Re: standing count in pro boxing
I do get it, but I also know that had it been Thompson in that situation the referee would have had a different opinion. That to me is a major issue with boxing and something that we shouldn't be ignoring.
Imagine Thompson bending over the ropes taking shots. Would the referee have gone "the ropes are holding him up" or "this needs to be stopped"?
Like wise what were Price team doing sending him out for round 5 anyway? He was gone in the last 15 seconds of round 4 and never recovered.
