Fighters That Boxed After Terrible Injuries/Accidents.

As we all know some of Boxings most remarkable stories are when fighters recieve terrible injuries outside of the ring then against all the odds return to Boxing.

Some that spring to mind are-

Willie Pep the all time great Featherweight broke his back in a plane crash but came back to regain his crown.

Eamonn Magee the World class Irish Light-Welterweigh recieved horrific injuries to his legs from a brutal street attack but resently returned to the ring and won his comeback fight.

Cleveland Williams, was shot by the police and almost died, came back but was not the same fighter.

Since the name cleveland williams was brought up, and good old terap's has been in exile for quite a while I'd be glad to function as his spokesperson:

That is not the way he fought when he was the fearsome Cleveland Williams. I would assume anyone would know that---but I assume wrong.

When poor Cleveland Williams was killed in an automobile accident a couple years ago--

his obituaries said that he had health problems since he was shot in the stomach.

And of course he was shot in the stomach almost two years before he fought Ali in the fight that the media uses to promote their product Ali as the "greatest of all time."

The great Nel Tarleton fought his entire career with only one lung, as a result of tuberculosis, which eventually claimed his life.

Eugene Criqui had his jaw resturctured after it was hit by a shell in WW I and resumed his career with great success, changing from a boxer to a knockout specialist to minimise the risk of damage to his jaw:

Two well-known fighters, Babe Herman and Ray Lampkin, came close to dying in the hospital from ring injuries. Both resumed their respective careers, although not with much success.

California middleweight/light heavyweight champ Jack Chase shot fellow contender Aaron Tiger Wade in the shoulder in December 1943.

Wade came back with a KO win, but lost and drew with Chase in two subsequent fights.

Tiger Jack Fox was stabbed with a ten inch razor blade below the heart by an angry woman (probably a girlfiend) in December 1938. He spent a week in the hospital and wound up fighting Melio Bettina for the title in February 1939, unsuccessfully. Fox by his own admission was not at full strength for that bout, which he was favored to win.

Angel Manfredy has been involved in something like 11 auto accidents. He was badly injured in one of them and the doctors told him he would never box again. A few weeks later he was back in the ring and a couple of years later he defeated Arturo Gatti and became one of the hottest properties in boxing.
Understanably though, he pays sky high car insurance fees.

Former WBO Middleweight champion Otis Grant suffered terrible injuries and burns in a car crash and is now in line for another world title shot.

Although it doesn't qualify as an injury, Archie Moore had an ulcer removed from his stomach, the huge scar clearly visible ever after. This happened in the early 1940s, when he was a solid contender at middleweight. As a result of this, Moore had health issues for some time, and at one point his weight was way down to 108 lbs.
The fact that he came back to become the longest reigning champion ever at light-heavyweight and a top contender at heavy, is nothing short of remarkable.
It takes a great fighter to overcome great challenges. Moore was a turly great fighter.

Another that doesn't qualify as an injury but more of an impediment to a boxing career - can't think of his name ATM but he was from Indonesia or thereabouts, and was a lower weight world champ for a decent while in the early 80's

I guess you were thinking about Dodie Penalosa of The Philippines who had an underdeveloped left leg as a by-product of childhood polio.

Good call, I remember hearing about that. If I am right Peden was asleep in his bed when a guy creeped into his room and started attacking him with a Baseball bat. I think the guy was upset because Peden was seeing a girl this guy had the hots for.

I heard for ages Peden had terrible trouble sleeping after that, which is totally understandable really. He used to lay a folded bath towel at the bottom of the inside of his bedroom door whilst he slept so if anyone tried to enter the room the door would jam.

Nubby Joe Gans -a lightweigh-welter of the twenties- fought pro and did well in spite of missing a hand. That's why the nickname "Nubby" because his left glove was attached to the nub, but despite this handicap he was a good boxer and a good puncher.

Billy Daniels -who fought Ali- was missing a finger. Top lightweight Tommy Spiegel had a leg withered by polio. Cyclone Hart -a KO artist- was also a polio victim.

In the eighties, Vincent "Choo Choo" Bell had three pro fights in spite of having one leg and fighting with a protesis. I saw him fight and wrote an article about him on the Cyber Boxing Zone.

World champ Mario D'Agata and Spanish top fighter Kid Tano were both deaf mutes.

Of course recently Jorge Castro recovered from a terrible car crash and boxed one more fight, but lost.

Still a remarkable acheivement considering his injuries.

Jeff Chandler was seriously stabbed. Paul Spadafora was shot. And one of the Mayweather clan, either Pretty Boy's father or Jeff was shot in the leg with a shotgun.

I've heard conflicting stories about how badly hurt Ray Lampkin was in his fight with Duran. First I heard he was near death, but later that he was no where near that serious. He did fight 7 months later. Also, while I'll never be a fan of Duran's. in fairness, I've read at least one account that said he visited Lampkin in the hospital.

Can't remember the source, but I read at least one place, that after being stopped in the 10th round by Dicky Ryan in 99, that Brian Nielsen was briefly on life support. Don't know the truth of the story, but he was back in the ring in less than 3 months.

I was big fan of Angel Manfredy for awhile, especially after he busted up Gatti. But he's been known to do some silly things. I heard that he almost got killed on a motorcycle near the start of his career, and to celebrate the signing of his first pro fight, he partied all night with his friends. He was stopped in the 2nd round.
