Greatest fight in a British ring you have seen.
Greatest fight in a British ring you have seen.
on TV or live.
Have to say, this thread is just an excuse to say I recently got hold of the McAuley vs Bassa fights. I remember the first one being a cracker (couldn't remember the rematch at all). I think its got to be among the best fights to ever grace a British ring.
Its up there with Benn vs McLellan, Rigby vs Ayers, Thompson vs Eubank I and II, Eubank vs Benn.
My god, I KNEW the result but I think I would have been bouncing up and down less if I was ontop of Pamela Anderson than I was today. What a fight, how many twist and turns.
The rematch was okay, but Bassa fought much smarter.

Michael Ayers v Wayne Rigby I, the most incredible fight I've ever seen in any ring. There's been fights with better action, but never one with the emotional component that fight had, what a credit to the sport that fight was. For those who haven't seen it, Ayers in the end just refuses to hit Rigby any more and the referee rightly stopped it, after both men had been down in a real see-saw battle.

But people forget that McClellan was battering Benn for most of that fight and had it not been for the brain damage, Gerald probably would have won the fight. Although the G man was hurt at times, he never went down from punches - both times he took a voluntary knee. Still can't take away from the heart Benn showed though.Arsenal wrote:Benn - McClelland
Simply cos Benn Made McClelland eat his words. Before the fight McClelland was mouthing off big time.

Jobbed in his hometown too!jamesmcdonnell wrote:Has to be said, Brodie's not been in many dull fights, such a shame he got jobbed against Willie Jorrin, he should have been a genuine world champion that night.
Best one for me since I'm young and not seen too many oldies is Benn Mc Clellan that was vicious!
Michael Ayres v Colin Dunne , but there's been so many fantastic in Britain the list could go on, and on......
Also, I remember being at the PJ Galagher v Charles Shephard clash and it was a gripping encounter with a truly incredible atmosphere.
Some of the small hall stuff must get a mention too. Years ago there was Mattthew Jennings v Max Wallace which was the first time I'd witnessed nobbins and thought the crowd was protesting the decision, but later found out the boxers split the money collected. Shame nobbins still don't happen.
At the same venue a few years later, Kevin Middleton v Bradley Stone was a hum-dinger.
And more recently Leigh Allis v Valery Odin was a pulsating battle. Funny enough, it was this fight that reminded me of nobbins and I'd have like to tossed a few quid in the ring.

for atmosphere christie v kaylor and holligan v neary take some beating.
i think someone has already mentioned the ayres / rigby fight, this was a see-saw thriller that had everything even the kind of honorable ending that didnt leave me feeling sick in the pit of my stomach unlike the benn / mcclelland bout which i have only watched once - on t.v the night it took place. as great a fight that it was the horrific injuries gerald sustained and the nightmarish situation his family inherited as a result of the fight did and has made me to continue to think about why do i watch a sport that ruins some peoples lives like that.
