Derry Matthews - champion again - old school
Derry Matthews - champion again - old school
What a fight - and what a turnaround! Matthews never gave up , or lost hope , and landed the winner when the fight looked lost. You don't get this type of event in other sports. Defeats from the jaws of victory can happen in an instant in boxing , and his corner and friends loved it didn't they ?
But where the real class came from was in his after fight interview when he did everything to support his opponent -well done lad.
Derry is a throwback.

Mathews was very classy after the fight.
He has had one of the most entertaining careers of any British fighter in the last 10 years.

He was very lucky; Coyle battered him last night; it was one punch against the run of play. I reckon the bout will have taken more out of Derry than Tommy.

Derry used his hard punching ability to turn the fight around. Why slag him off?palooka wrote:He was very lucky; Coyle battered him last night; it was one punch against the run of play. I reckon the bout will have taken more out of Derry than Tommy.
Re: Derry Matthews - champion again - old school
I've not slagged him at all; I admire the man and thought he'd handle Tommy fairly easily; he got a pretty good boxing lesson and was pasted; he looked on the way out until that big punch; I thought Coyle was closing in to finish him off.Horse wrote:Derry used his hard punching ability to turn the fight around. You said he was lucky, that's putting him down.palooka wrote:I've not slagged him at all; I admire the man and thought he'd handle Tommy fairly easily; he got a pretty good boxing lesson and was pasted; he looked on the way out until that big punch; I thought Coyle was closing in to finish him off.

Why did he feel the need to come into this thread and say it?Fat Git wrote:Derry Mathews said as much himself.

Have a day off; Matthews did Coyle with a very good left hook against every other minute of the bout, it was Derry who was on the way to a comprehensive and punishing loss and he was lucky; the hook he threw got him a KO win when he was on the way to a loss.Horse wrote:You said he was lucky, that's putting him down.palooka wrote:I've not slagged him at all; I admire the man and thought he'd handle Tommy fairly easily; he got a pretty good boxing lesson and was pasted; he looked on the way out until that big punch; I thought Coyle was closing in to finish him off.

You should have a day off considering the nonsense you're posting today.palooka wrote:Have a day off;
He still had another 2 rounds to get him, so even if that punch hadn't landed there was a good chance he would have got to him anyway.palooka wrote:Matthews did Coyle with a very good left hook against every other minute of the bout, it was Derry who was on the way to a comprehensive and punishing loss and he was lucky; the hook he threw got him a KO win when he was on the way to a loss.

We must have been watching a different bout.Horse wrote:You should have a day off considering the nonsense you're posting today.palooka wrote:Have a day off;

I watched a bout in which Mathews stopped Coyle with a peach of a punch.palooka wrote:We must have been watching a different bout.

Me too but I can't remember what happened in the 9 rounds before that, can you?Horse wrote:I watched a bout in which Mathews stopped Coyle with a peach of a punch.palooka wrote:We must have been watching a different bout.

Who cares? Mathews got the job done.palooka wrote:Me too but I can't remember what happened in the 9 rounds before that, can you?
Why be negative about him in this thread?
Re: Derry Matthews - champion again - old school
He did the business and was losing the fight, he was lucky, if he came on here he'd most likely admit to it. He was 90% through the bout and looked like he'd get stopped, a very good punch but a bad display from him; Coyle had his number and belied his inexperience. I don't have to kiss Derrys arse coz you're licking his balls.Horse wrote:Who cares? Coyle didn't win, so he didn't really have Mathew's number.palooka wrote:He did the business and was losing the fight, he was lucky, if he came on here he'd most likely admit to it. Ignore Horse. He's just fishing for an argument.

No, I thought his comment was unnecessary.Finch wrote:x2.

He's a good angler
A rematch would be good though I can imagine Derry has bigger more lurative fish to fry (Mitchell maybe?) Coyle really showed he belongs in that sort of class; he really surprised me I thought he'd pick and poke but he did well; Derry is a class act and a seasoned championship level boxer. The lightweight division is red hot.

I'd say they're better off going after other opponents.ShadrachSimmo wrote:Rematch surely.
Coyle has already gained a lot of credibility from the Mathews fight. The risk vs reward for him in a second fight doesn't seem worth it compared to going after the other domestic lightweights.

If Mathews was in that situation with Rees or Crolla I feel he would have been stopped.
Unlucky for Coyle but that's boxing.
Gethin, Coyle, Crolla or Comney next.

Re: Derry Matthews - champion again - old school
If a professional boxer with a reputation for being a puncher throws a punch at his opponents head and knocks him out how is that luck?
He was behind but always a threat and as coyle got tired he presented an opportunity and he took it.
That's boxing.
