1. Frazier
2. Tyson
3. Marciano
4. Louis

none of them were glass jawed though by any means. I could see an argument for Tyson being tougher than Frazier, but Frazier showed more heart down the stretch in tough fights so I give him the edge.

I think you need to approach this in a couple of ways - firstly the strength of the chin and secondly the recuperative ability and heart to get back up and carry on. Purely on strength of chin, I'd rate them in this order:

1. Tyson
2. Frazier
3. Marciano
4. Louis

But factoring in heart and recuperative abilty:

1. Marciano
2. Frazier
3. Tyson
4. Louis

All had good chins and there's not a big gulf between #1 and #4.

I don't think Marciano and Frazier would have been knocked out by the punches that Douglas landed on Tyson.

I would rank them:
1. Marciano
2. Frazier
3. Tyson
4. Louis

Considering all heavyweights, they all had good chins.

I couldn't rank them except to say that, when it came to the ability to take a blistering single-shot and keep going, I put Marciano and Tyson above Louis and Frazier.

The only guy who really stopped Frazier in his tracks was Foreman, and that was after several clubbing punches. Marciano was knocked down by Walcott and Moore who were strong punchers, but no George Foreman, so I think it's an open ended question as to who had the better chin.

How he got up from the 2nd-Knockdown after absorbing a vicious right upper-cut
flush on the jaw is something that no other human could have done.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joe Louis, the Brown Bomber was rattled by many mediocre-punchers, and was KO'd
'flat-out' by an aged Max Schmeling.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rocky Marciano could be caught, but only went down twice. But, both men who
floored him were old fighters.

Mike Tyson took bombs, and never waivered. The loss to Buster Douglas was more
of a combination of issues.

Il Duce,

You saw the same thing I did on that second knockdown of Frazier in the first Foreman fight.

Others have said one of the later knockdowns where Joe came off his feet was the hardest punch, but I've long maintained that the right uppercut causing the second knockdown was one of the most powerful punches I've ever seen. Very, very few fighters would have gotten up from that punch. It effectively ended the fight right there, imo.

Frazier really did have the heart of a lion to keep getting up the way he did that night. I salute him.

If I am not mistaken, I seen a picture of Moore landing the knockdown punch on Marciano, and The Rock was off balance to begin with throwing a wild right hand. The knock down, in a sense, wasn't exactly because Moore was such a strong puncher that he dropped Marciano--- he just caught Marciano at the right time when he was off balance.

Considering how often he got hit, it was impressive that Marciano only knocked down twice and rarely was hurt. Both times he got up right away.
The other three were knocked down more and hurt more often.
Even if was an accumilation of blows, it is doubtful that Marciano would have been stopped by Douglas and Holyfield. ( I hope I didn't open a can of worms where we start hearing about "Prime" Tyson and Cus and Ronney and the gang.)

As for coming back from a knockdown, I always thought the way that Louis came back from getting through the ropes by Buddy Baer was great. He just climbed back into the ring as if nothing happened and went back to fighting.

It's at about 7:40 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pPfPUQopfg

I actually hadn't seen it before, but I agree with your take on it, Rocky wasn't really hurt.

Archie Moore couldn't have floored Frazier with a shotgun.

Tyson may have been less prone to a one shot KD.

But he was more discouraged than the others were after taking a bomb.
