Matthews did Coyle with a very good left hook against every other minute of the bout, it was Derry who was on the way to a comprehensive and punishing loss and he was lucky; the hook he threw got him a KO win when he was on the way to a loss.

He still had another 2 rounds to get him, so even if that punch hadn't landed there was a good chance he would have got to him anyway.

We must have been watching a different bout.

I think the Burns v Gonzales bout is still fresh in your mind Billy and yes; Ricky was lucky that night and Derry was lucky last night. It's good that you defend your friends and we all know that Ricky and Derry are your friends; it doesn't make you the most impartial of commentators though Billy - it's; 'I'll back Ricky right or Ricky wrong' and 'I'll back Derry right or Derry wrong'. Lets hope Ricky doesn't get undone by a big hook after schooling his next opponent for 9 rounds else we may see you back peddling on what you say

I don 't get the idea that Matthews was lucky. He knocked the guy clean out. It doesn't matter if it was the first minute or the last minute - that's boxing. I have every sympathy for Coyle, and he'll come again,but he got knocked out!

If it was the first minute it was less lucky than if it was the last: particularly if he'd been on the receiving end for the fight; it was a great punch and if Mathews had the guile to walk Coyle onto it earlier he wouldn't have taken such punishment on the way. I thought he was lucky as Coyle had the run of the fight.

What a fight - and what a turnaround! Matthews never gave up , or lost hope , and landed the winner when the fight looked lost. You don't get this type of event in other sports. Defeats from the jaws of victory can happen in an instant in boxing , and his corner and friends loved it didn't they ?

But where the real class came from was in his after fight interview when he did everything to support his opponent -well done lad.

Derry is a throwback.

It was interesting to see Richie Woodhall predict Derry would still pull through. Coyle was on top but hey, that's Boxing... It was a cracking bout and Coyle's stamina was superb, Even Jamie Moore was a little worried that he may blow out.. But well done Dirty, Coyle can come again!!

There was no luck whatsoever in Rickys or Derrys win, dont get me wrong on both occasions they struggled a lot at times but see a sign of a true champion is they WILL find a way

He shouldnt see it as a devestating loss,he never done much wrong to be fair but theres a time you see the fight out and a time when you go for it coz your down, its a valuable lesson learned i hope

No need for a rematch IMO .

Derry was well beaten , he said as much himself , yet showed what a true warrior and champ he is by digging deep and producing a knock out punch.

Tommy can also move on,safe in the knowledge that he put on a great show and belongs at the top level domestically . He is only a young lad and there should be plenty of options and opportunities to come his way . He should be proud of his effort and performance. This experience will make him a better fighter .

Respect and Well done to both lads, you are a credit to the sport.

every time Matthews does it - follows a blemish, often a debilitating one, with a big performance. this guy can come back from 2, even 3 blemishes, to score the big victory.

I always think of "cat" and "9 lives" following a derry Matthews comeback.

the man has really produced, playing his part in one of the most exciting eras of british lightweight boxing I've come across.

derry is a fornicating amazing example of a fighter who can come back. he is that brilliant example who makes a case for giving a good fighter 2nd or 3rd chances. I used to moan that sky sports used to favour him and give him chance after chance, but when a man produces, improves, and grabs opportunities by the scruff of the neck, how can you complain.

you have to say, one of british boxing's true hard bastards. Matthews is surely going to go down as a scouse legend.

who next? as Matthews is a veteran, and vulnerable, I think he's best when surprising an opponent. so a fresh face, a different foe, someone he's not fought before. fighting coyle a 2nd time, something could go wrong.

which crolla fans have belittled Matthews? surely Matthews winning like this underlines the good company that crolla's been in with. Matthews has been a positive experience for crolla, who had to adapt his boxing to move forward - which he ultimately did, vs rees.

if I was a dirty derry supporter, i'd not like to see rematches, because it's the other guy who can improve at this stage (crolla 2, rees 2). so no crolla 3 - crolla could go after the Italian who stopped Matthews, for the European title. and no coyle 2, please - hard to top a come from behind KO.

As has been said, no point in a Coyle rematch. Coyle showed he had the beating of Derry in the first fight.

Personally I would love to see him in with Mitchell.
