Scott Quigg to get World title shot?

Post by The Insider »

Looks like he could be getting a shot at the WBA Super Bantamweight title on the Haye v Fury show.

Yes I heard about this.

I hate to draw comparisons with Frampton, but don't you think if Carl had have stuck to his guns, he'd be fighting for the IBF on this undercard ?

Or if Quigg was still signed up, we could have seen a double-header of Quigg fighting for the WBA too - and if both came through as champions we could have seen a WBA vs IBF title fight which would have been absolutely perfect timing to do the fight.

No doubt about this, Quigg will gain incredible exposure from this fight, because it's going to be watched by a bucket load of people.

Instead Kiko gets the IBF title shot !

Its not ideal and it's happening more and more with the organisations. Rig is the "Unified" champ or some tosh and the regular "world title" is currently vacant so this is what Scott will be fighting for. Still a very good bargaining chip if the fight goes ahead and Quigg wins.

IMHO I think we can blame Mccguigan and his ego got in the way of Framptons career... If frampton stayed with MR then we couldve seen karl fighting for IBF and Quigg for the WBA ..... Then i dotn think we had to wait for long for Quigg v Frampton.

Spot on it's case of Barry being more concerned about himself than Frampton.

Quigg looks to be a solid boxer, but who has he really beaten?

The only quality win on his record is Monroe.

Couldnt the same be said about the bulk of British boxers?

For me Quigg has the potential, but there are some pretty handy operators around at his weight worldwide!

True, but Munroe was a former World title challenger and a good European champ. It's a good win. Lets hope the promoters have set aside a lot of tickets for the undercard lads as Quigg can really shift them. I doubt it though, for Haye-Harrison none could get any.

Frampton doesn't strike me as a stupid man and McQuigan surely didn't hypnotise him; They will have chosen to do the best thing for themselves; Eddie may not be the best man to do the best for Frampton just because he's got the SKY pie.

True, although maybe he was the best man because Frampton could well have been IBF champ already. If he stuck with Hearn he supposedly had the shot in May - and if he is as good as everybody thinks then he would have won. Plus I don't recall seeing many fighters coming out and saying Hearn hasn't looked after them/been unfair purse-wise.

No doubt Frampton isn't hypnotised by McGuigan - but I would say he places an awful lot of trust in him. I just hope Barry Mc does right by the kid and not just himself.

I am no expert at all and didn't McGuigan have issues with his promoters/managers that spoiled a portion of his career? I can imagine that Barry would want to avoid any pitfalls (imaginary or otherwise) and have learnt from his own experience. Another factor; maybe; I cannot think of one powerful/influential Irish promoter and obviously Frampton (and Barry) being Irish and Ireland having their own television channels they may have thought they would make most of the dough in Ireland so why was Eddie needed? Doesn't McGuigan give Frampton a massive amount of time and effort as well? When there's one fighter to look after they can; with 15 or more it is more difficult.

You can hardly blame Frampton for not wanting to appear on a Luke Campbell undercard in a shithole like Hull.

Looks like he and McGuigan are in complete control of there own destiny under the allegedly banner - cant argue with that really.

As always Palooka you make good points.

But: the point you mention about irish promoters - that does suggest greed on McGuigans part then? Because taking this route has set Framptons career back about 9/12 months - so you could say he did need Hearn seeing as he was the one getting him the title shot.

Also RE: the time McGuigan spends on Frampton, or the time the McGuigan's spend on Frampton is more appropriate - it isn't like they weren't getting paid for it mate.

What might have happened is that McGuigan wanted a bigger slice of the pie, was convinced Frampton would let him do it (after speaking some blarney) and then went for it. The winner is McGuigan, not Frampton. All in my opinion.

Thank you DMA :TU:

I'm not sure that spotting an opportunity and being in a position to take is greed or is taking an opportunity; McGuigan is highly thought of and associated with the boxing, he has a bit of the nostalgic 'feel good' thing that is bollocks but goes a long way to feathering a nest. It may be that if McGuigan did not act quickly the opportunity would pass; I would imagine that both Barry and EDdie Hearn are considerably wealthier than McGuigan, they move toward lucrative deals still though are comfortable - is that greed?

If I'd trained and mentored someone for thousands of hours and helped them through my hard won lessons, (as many do in the boxing world not just the McGuigans) I'd be a little miffed at having a large portion of actual and potential earnings going to someone who hadn't put the same in. I can imagine the promotional business being difficult and a headache but it looks like it's done by the numbers, a show in Hull is done and arranged the same as one in Manchester etc.

Time will tell. The only reason I say greed is that it only seems to benefit one person, or family - and currently you would have to say the things Frampton has lost have not obviously benefited him at all - loss of SKY, longer title route, etc.

Greed is run through professional sport like letters through a stick of rock. The top promotional outfits worldwide operate similar to a cartel and tie performers up with long term contracts that generally suit the promotional side more than the performer - there are certainly more loopholes and clauses in favour of the businessman than the boxer. Though Frampton is very good I don't think he is ready to be a world champion and keep it for long; maybe McGuigan felt that he needed a years more seasoning - sparring top fighters, behind closed doors bouts and a bit of experience. Getting a quick title shot must be gratifying but can be a curse in disguise.

The IBF title was there for his taking. Now somebody he has already beaten handily is fighting for it. I feel like he has spotted an opportunity for himself and has gotten greedy - And I just hope it won't affect Frampton long term. It is ok filling stadiums in Ireland - but you also need the wider audience too - something he has also lost somewhat.

I am sure they know what they are doing, and I guess it doesn't take much to look at it either way. I just don't like how they have seemingly isolated the kid (or 'taken him into' - depending which way you look at it again) into their family. They have their claws in extremely deeply.

Frampton has no chance of getting onto Irish TV. RTE, which showed Bernard Dunne and is the Irish equivilent to the BBC, has no intention in showing pro boxing anymore. Willie Casey / Rigondeaux was eventually put on despite the reluctance from RTE. Setanta could pick it up but its unlikely.

He tweeted a while back that his fights will be shown on terrestrial tv over here. Now, whether that is true or not.
