Re: Sugar Ray Robinson v Mick Leahy - Ice Rink, Paisley
I used to know a guy called Len, who worked with a guy and one day got talking to him at work. The guy said he used to be a boxer and Len, who was a boxing nut, started asking him some questions, like did he fight anyone that Len would have heard of. Len's colleague was very reluctant to say that the guy was Sugar Ray Robinson and even more reluctant to tell him that he beat a shell of the great man.
The guy Len worked with was a man called Mick Leahy, who was a class act, through and through.

The background is that Robinson came over for a fight with Terry Downes at Wembley in 1962. The Sugar Man was broke and picked up a good purse for Downes, which he conceded on points, and returned for more paydays in Europe over the next couple of years, winning in France, Belgium and Austria, before the fight with the gritty Leahy in Scotland in 1964. Robinson was 44 but brought a record of 160-13-5 (103) and still had all the moves. By all accounts he looked unlucky to concede the points.

When Mick eventually fessed up to fighting SRR, he didn't volunteer the fact that he won and when he did, he said he had only beaten a shell of the great man.
That's all I've got for you mate.
