Barker v Geale
Barker v Geale
I may get ridiculed for this, but Geale has never impressed me and Barker is 5/4 to win am I missing something?

Re: Barker v Geale
Barker and Macklin seemed to be living off the reputation of having decent fights against Martinez who is fighting above his natural weight and certainly getting on a bit.
We seen what happened to Macklin recently so I'd be hesitant of piling into Barker.

Re: Barker v Geale
I've watched Geales last couple of fights thought he looked decent should be a good fight this. Miles better than the opposition Darren has faced recently.
Hope Darren can do it !!!!!!

Out of all the brit MW for me Barker has the best boxing skills... love watching him box gives me goose bumps tbh :) .. he trains now more or less injury free so can train lengthier and harder so hopefully stamina shouldnt be a problem...
Really think Darren has a great chance .... il say points wide ...might even get a stoppage later on

Yeah i agree i fancy this as Barkers coming out party,i always rated him the most skilled out of the British MW although i was impressed with Murrays performance against Martinez but although Geales also a skilled fighter i just think Barkers just a little bit better, hopefully he,s had an injury free camp,if so i fancy a Barker SD/MD winajwesty13 wrote:Out of all the brit MW for me Barker has the best boxing skills... love watching him box gives me goose bumps tbh :) .. he trains now more or less injury free so can train lengthier and harder so hopefully stamina shouldnt be a problem...

Barker will never get a better chance than this, not much firepower to worry about. He'll have to have 12 good rounds in him though.

yeah think murray has been real unlucky think he should have got the nod in his 2 big fights...
Re: Barker v Geale
Geale has a much better record over the past few years than Barker does, and odds are often significantly based on records; maybe you're missing that connection and the fact that Barker's top recent wins came over Kerry Hope and Spada, while Geale defeated multiple world class opponents (Sturm and Sylvester) and a few top 15/20 types (Adama, Karmazin, and arguably Mundine).WelshJack wrote:I may get ridiculed for this, but Geale has never impressed me and Barker is 5/4 to win am I missing something?
I think this is a well-matched bout, but the disparity in the general quality of their opposition shouldn't be ignored.
Re: Barker v Geale
I think Geale is a rightful favourite, his resume is more impressive than Barkers and Darren does sometimes pick up and carry injuries so there is always that angle, however
the most important angle for me is that its on a Gary Shaw promotion and Geale has signed with Shaw if memory serves and for me that means Barker may well need to win
8 rounds, I hope he can do it but Geale is a busy fighter and I would be surprised if he does not win 5 rounds at least.
Power edge definately with Barker, Geale can be hurt and Darren is very accurate when he is on his game.

Re: Barker v Geale
Barker has a good chance and 5/4 reflects that really. It's a winnable fight but won't be easy. Geale just gets the edge being champ.
Re: Barker v Geale
I've not seen much of Geale in action, but been really impressed with Barker of late. He now seems to have some power to go0 with his exemplary skills.
And the new...........

Re: Barker v Geale
Sturm is such an overrated fighter. He's so static, he's hardly the hardest guy to land on. Sylvester got knocked out in 5 rounds by Proska who in turn got destroyed by Golovkin.crusader wrote:Geale has a much better record over the past few years than Barker does, and odds are often significantly based on records; maybe you're missing that connection and the fact that Barker's top recent wins came over Kerry Hope and Spada, while Geale defeated multiple world class opponents (Sturm and Sylvester) and a few top 15/20 types (Adama, Karmazin, and arguably Mundine).WelshJack wrote:I may get ridiculed for this, but Geale has never impressed me and Barker is 5/4 to win am I missing something?

Re: Barker v Geale
Sturm isn't the greatest, but he's got a very good jab, good technique, and his performances against Zbik and Murray alone are impressive than anything a Barker victim has done. SS had a string of solid performances against fighters on Proksa's level, so the loss to Proksa and immediate retirement suggest to me that SS was past his best in that bout; maybe the loss to Geale drained him physically or mentally, or both. At the time of their losses to Geale, I don't see how Sturm and SS could be ranked outside the top 10.
Besides, you're mentioning holes in Geale's opposition while not doing the same for Barker's significantly worse opposition, which completely misses the point I raised about RELATIVE quality of opposition. Sturm and SS may have had their flaws, but they would each be the best wins on Barker's record, and overall Geale's record is still much stronger than Barker's, unless you give Barker far too much credit for beating Spada (probably his best opponent, yet he lost twice to Sturm victim Zbik and to SS victim Mahir Oral), Hope, Rotolo, and Belghecham.

Re: Barker v Geale
No i wasnt saying that Barker has better fighters. However just because one guy has faced better opposition doesnt mean he's a more talented fighter than the other guy. I still dont think Geale is that special. I think Barker has a very good chance in this fight.crusader wrote:Sturm isn't the greatest, but he's got a very good jab, good technique, and his performances against Zbik and Murray alone are impressive than anything a Barker victim has done. Re: Barker v Geale
Of course it doesn't, but it should be used as context when assessing how they performed; I imagine it's much easier to look good against Rotolo than Sturm, for example.
Moreover, and the point of my initial post, one shouldn't act dumbfounded as to why Geale is favored given his superior resume; surely anyone who follows boxing should know that predictions and odds are heavily based on records.

Re: Barker v Geale
Geale is a very busy boxer and has proven himself at a decent level and has a great engine on him. Barker can box clever himself and can crack a bit, I think he has a dig that can hurt Daniel but like you guys say will have to be ready to keep it going well for twelve.
I'm looking forward to this fight.
