Boxing was the biggest sport in the world for 100 years or so, and contrary to popular belief, prospects usually didn't fight other prospects and champions were well protected.daviddee wrote:I have never ever had a conversation with a boxing fan about rankings. Rankings, shmankings, who has ever given a toss about rankings?
They are subjective and meaningless, like Zimbabwean election results or the rankings that Indian restaurants give to the "spiciness" of their curries.
Jalfrezi 4 chillies? Madrass 5???
madness.
Would fights be decided by rankings? the champ only fight the number 1 ranked fighter? Would the 6th have to fight the 8th and so on?
If rankings don't decide who fights who, then why bother?
Fans want to see their fighter in grudge matches and exciting, interesting fights
My point isn't who fights who!!! And Fans want to see title fights its been proven time and time again!!! Why do you think there is so many titles.. Casual fans like a bit of bad blood and as you say grudge matches.. If you are number 8 in the Rankings there is 7 Guys ahead of you that can be fought to move forward for titles !! Instead of fighting a journeyman for a British Masters or some sort of 2nd rate belt... I'm a big fan of boxing and want to see prospects fighting prospects.. Champions fighting champions good example is Billy Joe Saunders he's fighting live opposition in most of his fights.. Other fighters take fights they are pretty much guaranteed to win as this moves them up the rankings.. Boxing isn't a mainstream sport and will never be unless there is less of the Mis match fights..
Boxings problem isnt mismatches or ranking systems.....
