Chris Pyatt??

Post by jont »

Can someone share some stories or information about Chris Pyatt.. I have looked up his record on boxrec but missed out on seeing him fight.. what kind of style did he have? How would he do in todays 154 pound division? Was he unlucky to not win a title or an overachiever? Thanks in advance for any responses...

He was a fierce left hooker aggressive fighter who could bang.Sometimes relied on the big shot bit too much such as against gianfranco rosi.He would have put some hurt on the domestic level at 154 at the present time.

The hair was later in his career i think he was usualy cropped short

He ultimately fought completely the wrong fight against Steve Collins. But he had decent momentum going into that battle as WBO middleweight champ.

Pyatt was a product of the Belgrave club in Leicester (think Sibbo) and cut a charismatic figure with his swarthy, solid build, although the look flattered to deceive. With an American father and English mother, Pyatt was just a teenager when he made it to Wembley in 1981 but he was outsmarted in the ABA welterweight final by the more seasoned Terry Marsh, who pretty much toyed with him. A year later Pyatt was back to outscore Manchester's Bob McKenley in a disappointing, messy final but he looked good when he won welterweight gold in the Commonwealth Games in the autumn of 1982. (Jimmy Price was England's shining star in Brisbane.)
Pyatt turned pro with the Cartel, sharing London digs with Jim McDonnell, and was moved nicely to British and European light-middleweight titles, suffering one meaningless cuts defeat in the process. He stopped Prince Rodney for the British title, but Rodney was dead at the weight; he crushed a hapless Dutchman for the European title. Reality struck when he defended his European belt in Italy against Gianfranco Rosi, a man Lloyd Honeyghan had sparked in three rounds. Rosi dished out a 12-round beating.
Pyatt left the Cartel and linked up with promoter F rank Warren and was built to a shot at WBO light-middleweight champion John David Jackson, but in front of his own fans he was floored and easily outboxed by the slick southpaw American. It was another lesson. Nevertheless, Pyatt came good under the Matchroom banner in a short but exciting reign as WBO middleweight kingpin which ended when Steve Collins outmuscled him.
Overall, Chris underachieved because he had looked such a great prospect as an amateur, smooth and sharp, particularly with the left hook, but he was ragged as a pro as if he were caught between boxing and punching. He didn't hard enough to be a puncher, although that left hook was tasty, and he wasn't gifted enough to be a boxer. He also had a tendency to mark up. The defeats to Marsh, Rosi, Jackson and Collins show that when he met the best he was beaten comprehensively. His WBO title win, over an old, one-punch-a-minute Sumbu Kalambay, was desperately close.

agressive left hooker ,a good european fighters just shy of the best in the world ,fought @ light middle , middle weight i think he picked up a WBO belt .
i watched an interview with earnie fossie i think and he rated pyatt as the hardest single puncher he had ever worked with ,which was a bit of a shock .

i think pyatt would handle himself ok vs todays british midlle weights

Chris shared a flat with Karren Brady (formerly of BCFC fame now of The Apprentice fame) for a time before she got married.

I bet he smashed her back doors in at some point...

Now trains amateurs in Leicester

He's now got his pro training licence and he trains jahmaine smyle. I see pyatt in town often as he works the doors.
Me being a huge boxing fan i could chat to him for hours. I speak to alot of people who i dont think appreciate how good he was because they see him standing on a door now.
He'd give any of today's top midleweights big problems IMO.

Pyatt was a good boxer puncher, he came up against a top boxer in John David Jackson for the WBO light middle title, I thought he had a chance before the fight, but Jackson was superb that night.

I wouldn't of said his loss to Rosi was a 12 round beating Bennie, no one looks good against Rosi, well apart from Honeyghan.from what i remember it was a typical tough night in Italy with lots of rough housing from Rosi, but Pyatt held his own.

He used to wear some right dodgy shorts (very short) but I can remember him smashing Colin Manners into next week with a monster left hook. I can't imagine him getting much to worry about on the doors, he was a hard nut alright.
