Ayala might have walked right through Benes.
In 1983 Johnny Heard who I trained with and sparred with a zillion rounds(he also worked my corner) got a last minute fight in Austria vs Benes. Obviously Johnny was going over there as an "opponent". I will never forget the big smile on his face when he showed up at a weigh in at a card I was on when he got back. He had the newspaper clipping with him of him knocking out Benes in the first round. Stretched him with a right hand.

Re: Tony Ayala vs. Marijan Benes
Tony Ayala was a monster of a fighter. Vaguely remember hearing about a coincidental NYC street confrontation between Ayala and Roberto Duran and supposedly, Duran backed down. Anybody ever hear about this?
Ayala was just destroying people back then, and he was only a kid. Imagine if he kept out of trouble and what a force he would have become at his physical prime?

I doubt that would've happened at top level. Never heard the Duran gossip.montrealsuper wrote:Tony Ayala was a monster of a fighter.
