I don't know heaps on the subject, but something to bare in mind. It's a good idea after weights to eat some simple carbs with your protein shake, like white toast and jam or something. Otherwise your protein shake will just get used by the body as energy and not muscle building protein.

If you're looking for just something to aid recovery, then get a recovery specific shake (ie 2:1 Carbs:Protein, with a bunch of BCAA's/Amino's etc)... if you're looking to start putting on muscle, the most important thing is your diet first and foremost. Once you've got that right, then supplement it with lean protein shakes, and again, probably a recovery after training. All depends on what you're looking to achieve though.

Altho' I get pretty much all the nutrition I need from food I do have 1 whey protein shake a day on training days, immediately after training and I have it with a pint of full fat organic goats milk, + I have 2 x BCAA's 45 mins before I go to the gym and 2 with my shake.

I'm 43 now and in better nick now than I have been in absolute years, starting to get really good definition.

I'm no expert but I think you're doing too much weights tho', twice a day is not necessary, you have to allow yourself to recover as it's in recovery mode (sleep mostly) where your muscle rebuilds.

I do weights 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) for an hour or less even, heavy full compound exercises, so I allow good recovery time. If I've had a particularly heavier session than normal I sometimes eat cottage cheese before I go to bed.

Horses for courses I suppose. Personally I prefer some weights, supplemented with cycling and running. Being too heavy and bulky restricts pretty much every other aerobic activity.

I agree mate, I'm not bulky by any stretch of the imagination, I just wanted to lose weight (went from 16 stone to under 13.8 which I am now) and change my body composition.

I love cycling too, I go for a long ride over the weekend as I got a lovely bike through the cycle to work scheme (haven't cycled to work yet tho'), + I also walk almost everywhere. But in line with the OP, I never have shakes on non training days.

I've done the exact same thing this year, except I've come down from 17 to 13.8. Cycling to work and not eating in the evenings seems to have made the difference.

Then I talk to someone who recommended creatine. Had a couple tubs sent to me. After a month, I saw some greater improvement. Then I started taking protein. I was probably drinking 200 grams a day in just shakes. Mostly just the whey mix and water. I would walk around sipping it throughout the day. It was after a month of doing this and I saw grandiose gains. I gained a lot of muscle.

While I would sip the shakes throughout the day, I would drink a big shake right after a workout. Between 60-80 grams of protein. I was shitting stones though. And I'm not sure how healthy it was to consume so much. But drinking a lot right after a work out is the way to go if you want gains fast.
Mate drinking 200 grams a day of protein just in shakes won't be very good for you shakes should just be used when its convenient ie you can't get a proper meal into you. You only need 1-1.5 grams of protein a day per pound of body weight so say if your 180 lbs then 180-225 ish grams of protein is what you should be looking to achieve and the majority of that should be thru chicken fish eggs cottag cheese etc you should only use the protein shakes to help you hit the amount of protein you need if you start to take in too much protein your body will eventually just turn it in to body fat

looking at the advice above i'm guessing you boxing guys don't know much about this kind of stuff. Iv been bodybuidling for around 2 years now.. forget the whole 'quick iv just worked out get a protein shake'.. the first thing i want to say is food is always better than any shake you'l ever find. Secondly you want to be eating a good amount of protein every day not just after you'v trained.. Another point, it's useless working out twice a day doing weights... set out a weekly routine and follow it but don't work out every day.. remember this ... the gym is where you break down the muscle, the kitchen is where you feed it, bed is where it grows

Not entirely true, eating at a caloric surplus will gain fat. Eating too much protein won't do much except give the kidneys a very hard time.. especially shakes. Protien, unused gets urinated out.. the body can't store it, this is the reason its useful to eat 4-6 meals per day containing protein (+carbs and fats obviously)

Try eating more small farm, free range eggs, free range pork, turkey and venison, then if you feel you need more protein, try looking for an additional source.
