Holly Holm is doing well for herself. She is 4-0 in MMA and I don't think she is too far off a shot in the UFC, she has stopped all of her opponents in MMA, ironically one or two of them with kicks.

I was wondering what Joe Duffy was doing. I only saw the fight he lost against Ivan Musardo but he looked to a very, very good MMA fighter. From what I recall, and it is a while since I saw the fight, he was dominating Musardo until he go caught in a choke near the end of the fourth.

The boxer with probably the best success in mma was Jeremy 'Half Man, Half Amazing' Williams as I believe he retired undefeated in that particular sport. Not too bad for a boxer who had just a judo background.

Some of these names have been posted already...

There have been seven (or six depending on how you look at it) boxers who have held credible world titles (for the purposes of this thread defined as WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF) that have competed in MMA. Pro wrestling double crosses don't count. Nor does whatever the fornicate you want to call Ali/Inoki. Also, I'm only counting male fighters as well. There have been a few female boxers who have won credible professional boxing world titles and have also competed in MMA. Elena Reid for instance is one. Jessica Rakoczy is another. Holly Holm is another.

Anyway, the list...

- James Warring (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=466&cat=boxer): Who fought in a one night tournament in 1995. He beat his first opponent (a guy called Jerome Turcan), then beat Erik Paulson before losing in the final to Renzo Gracie. His MMA bouts took place just over three years after he had lost the IBF Cruiserweight Title. He might be the closest thing to a prime high-level boxer competing in MMA. Before he became a pro boxer Warring had won world titles in kickboxing. The fight took place at the World Combat Championship event in 1995. There were some special rules in place for the event. While the final was a full MMA bout the tournament was divided into two brackets. One was a strikers bracket (won by Warring) and one was grapplers bracket (won by Gracie).

I will lift a post from rekcutnevets over at Check Hook Boxing where he explains the rules of the striker bracket.

I remember renting this around 1996 or so. There were weird rules in place. They had the fighters broken up into strikers and grapplers. The strikers could not win by submission, unless it was due to strikes. The strikers could only be on the ground for like 2 minutes. Not at a time, but for the entire bout. There was a separate clock for the time spent of the ground. The grapplers had a 10 minute time limit for being on the ground. Aside from the limit on the ground, the grapplers fought under early ufc rules for the most part.

Here is Renzo's first fight in the tournament. At 3:03 you see why most fights are over when strikes to the back of the head are legal and someone takes the opponent's back. Renzo dished out enough elbows to create space for the choke. Renzo also shows what a bastard he once was immediately after winning.
The entire World Combat Championship event is actually up on You Tube, but I never got around to watching it. The link is posted below if you do have some time to spare.

- Ray Mercer (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): Fought two MMA bouts. Lost to Kimbo in a bout that was classified an exhibition due to the New Jersey State Athletic Commission refusing to sanction it. Knocked out Tim Sylvia in eighteen seconds in his second foray into MMA.

- Imamu Mayfield (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?cat=bo ... _id=5606): Mayfield was IBF cruiserweight champion for a period in 1997/1998. He fought, and got submitted by, Kazuyuki Fujita at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003 in a bout with slightly modified rules. Dave Meltzer touched on the bout in a piece he wrote for Yahoo around the time that James Toney was in the UFC. I will rip off Big Dave's description of the rules.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=d ... nmma082310
.... To make things more fair for the boxer, the rules were set up so Fujita would get only 20 seconds on the ground before he was stood up...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0yt1_UO5qg

- François Botha (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): This is the contentious one. In October of 1995 Botha beat Axel Schulz by decision to win the vacant IBF World Heavyweight Title. He then failed the drug test for roids. He was stripped of the title and his victory over Schulz was declared a no-contest. He did win a world title in the ring though so you can count him if you want. Anyway, he fought Akiyama, and lost by submission, on New Year's Eve 2004.

Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai Sityodtong (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): A Thai boxer who is a former WBA World super featherweight title is currently 1-1 in MMA.

Ricardo Mayorga: Fought an MMA fighter earlier this year in Nicaragua. Had his hand raised on the night but bout was later declared a no-contest as the stoppage was due to illegally kneeing his opponent in the spine. So, his MMA record is officially 0-0 (1 NC). Mayorge also missed weight for the bout by about 20 lbs.

Morrison was going to have an MMA fight but it never happened. In the end he had a modified rules fight where the rules were modified to such an extent that you couldn't call it an MMA bout. The AP did story where they accurately described the rules but still stated Morrison won his MMA debut. That was bullshit though. It was a fight in a cage but it wasn't an MMA bout. In the same way that UK-1 bouts take place in a cage but no one tries to call them MMA fights.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/b ... 8511_x.htm
...Stover said he originally agreed to the bout despite a stipulation against grappling, a big disadvantage for the 340-pound Stover, who outweighed Morrison by 125 pounds. But an hour before the fight, Stover said he was told he would not be allowed to strike Morrison with his knees or feet.

That essentially reduced the bout to a boxing match with five-ounce gloves...

Some other names that weren't listed. I'm only counting guys who boxed professionally before they fought MMA professionally.

Yōsuke Nishijima (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): Went 24-2-1 as a boxer. 0-5 in MMA competing mainly in Pride. His five losses were all to name fighters (Mark Hunt, Hidehiko Yoshida, Evangelista Santos, Phil Baroni and Melvin Manhoef)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ6VyVl-gAE

Melton Bowen (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): Boxing record of 35-9. Fought and lost to Steve Jennum at UFC 4.

Raphael Butler (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): 35-12 as a boxer. Among the people he's lost to are Eddie Chambers, Malik Scott, Neven Pajkic, David Price, Tye Fields and Chris Arreola. 6-0 in MMA. Fought on the undercard of the last Bellator show.

Video of his last MMA fight...

Raphael Butler vs. Jeremiah O'Neal (Bellator MMA - Bellator 96) (June 19, 2013) (Winstar World Casino) (Thackerville, Oklahoma, United States)

http://vimeo.com/68742246

Art Jimmerson (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): Went 33-18 as a pro boxer between 1985-2002. Fought Royce Gracie at UFC 1. When he fought in UFC his boxing record 29-5 and I think he had a ranking with one of the sanctioning bodies.

Art Jimmerson Vs Royce Gracie (UFC 1) (November 12, 1993) (McNichols Arena) (Denver, Colorado, United States)

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/10005108/ ... jimmerson/

Kevin Roiser (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): When people think of a pro boxer fighting at UFC 1 they think of Jimmerson. Roiser, who also fought at UFC 1, was mainly a kickboxer but he did compile a 7-17 pro boxing record between 1989 and 2001. He went 2-6 in his MMA career. Kickboxing record keeping isn't the best but his Wiki article lists him as having a kickboxing record of 74-8.

Maurice Smith (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): Boxing record of 0-2. Smith is a world champion kickboxer who won the UFC Heavyweight title. His MMA record stands at 13-13. While he was a kickboxer he did fight and lose two boxing bouts in the early 90s.

Don Fyre (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): Boxing record of 1-0. Well, Box Rec lists him as 1-0 though I have read that he may have had more fights than that. Don Fyre is a wrestler who became an MMA fighter. Don't quote me on this, but I think that back in the day he lost his place on the Oklahoma State varsity squad to Randy Couture. Using him as a boxer turned MMA fighter is slightly disingenuous but, like Maurice Smith, he does fit the criteria. Plus, what made him so effective early on was his wrestling ability combined with the fact that he could strike. MMA record ended up being 20-9-1 (1 NC).

Jérôme Le Banner (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.human_id=039471&cat=boxer): 6-0 a pro boxer. One of kickboxing's biggest stars. However he does have an MMA record of 3-2-1 and his first boxing bouts took place prior his first MMA bout. Le Banner had four boxing bouts in 1998 (and another two in 2009) and made his MMA debut in 2001. So while he's a kickboxer who's dabbled in boxing and MMA he can be included in this list.

Jan Nortje (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): 10-0 as pro boxer. Another guy who is more a kickboxer than anything but he has an MMA record of 2-6 and his boxing bouts (which took place between 1999 and 2001) predate his first MMA fight in August 2001.

Rubin Williams (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer): 26-18 as pro boxer and still fighting as of earlier this month. He loses a lot more than he wins these days. Well, he doesn't seem to win at all anymore and by my count is on a 16 fight losing streak. Anyway, went over to Japan in 2009 and fought and lost to, a greatly diminished, Kazushi Sakuraba.

Mayorga had his second MMA bout yesterday.

A link to the video of the fight is below. I believe that once again the fight was for Omega MMA, the Nicaraguan MMA promotion who promoted his fight with Wesley Tiffer earlier in the year. He lost via guillotine choke.

The fights goes about 1:40.

Patrick Smith who competed at UFC 1 and a few other UFC's (famously lost to Ken Shamrock in UFC 1) has a pro boxing record too. Sorry if he has already been mentioned.

Jessica Rakoczy (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer), who is a former WBC female lightweight champion, is 1-3 in MMA. She's a contestant on the upcoming series of The Ultimate Fighter. In a bit of trivia, Andre Berto's sister (who I don't believe has ever boxed professionally) is also a contestant on the show.

Holly Holm (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer) is also now focusing on MMA and is currently 4-0. She is a long term protege of Mike Winklejohn (who first discovered her as a teenager). So, she's probably better positioned than most boxers who make the transition. Winklejohn being a former world champion kickboxer who co-runs (with Greg Jackson) arguably the best MMA camp in the world. Holm had a professional kickboxing bout back in 2002 and of her four MMA stoppage wins three have been due to kicks.

Briggs' victory in K-1 was over Tom Erickson. Erickson was a very good amateur wrestler who became a good MMA fighter. He was in his thirties when he started fighting MMA but there was a period in time when people weren't too keen on the idea of fighting him. He was huge guy with very good wrestling. The kind of guy who could be a bit of a nightmare to fight. Actually, in a bit of trivia related to the topic he beat Matt Skelton in an MMA fight in 1:51. Unfortunately though his kickboxing was not one of his strengths. He had five K-1 fights and went 1-4.

Essentially, Briggs beat a wrestler in a kickboxing bout.
