RIP Emile Griffith.
RIP Emile Griffith.
Former World Welterweight & Middleweight champion Emile Griffith passed away yesterday, aged 75.
Re: RIP Emile Griffith.
RIP Emile, who was one very tough hombre, and fought the best welters and middles during his era.
Emile had an Australian connection when he brought out by Stadiums Ltd to fight Ralph Dupas on 10th February 1964 at the Old Barn. Emile really did a number on Ralph in just 3 rounds as this video clip taken at The Stadium shows:

Later as his career was in decline, Emile fought Tony Mundine, whose career was on the ascendant in Paris on 19th November 1973. Tony was way too strong and won an easy points win over 12.

Re: RIP Emile Griffith.
one of the first openly gay athletes as well.....
Re: RIP Emile Griffith.
He didn't actually "come out" until 2005, in a Sports Illustrated article, long after his career was over, even though it had been obvious for a long time.popeye1 wrote:one of the first openly gay athletes as well.....

vic patrick told the entire audience in our town hall that griffith was openly gay. that was in 1988.
i knew even before that, so your 2005 date is meaningless...
opponents used to taunt him about it. it was common knowledge and he never tried to hide or deny it. he was openly gay...
Re: RIP Emile Griffith.
i saw the Griffiths v Dupas fight, Griffiths was one of the best proportioned fighters i have seen, word was that Benny Paret upset him with a few words about his shirtlifting career, he also had a Hat making business,he was a great fighter,R.I.P,all the best

So what if he was gay Popeye1, does that make him any less of an athlete
