Vali - incompetent. Saj - cringeworthy embarrassing attention seeking bag-carrier.

Neither have aided Khan's cause, especially in the PR stakes. In boxing Khan is probably the most disliked boxer in the UK. Why is that? He has been badly advised and surrounded by amateur muppets. I would guess that that goes at least some way to explaining it.

Do sportsmen really need all these representatives? Can they not just sign a contract for whatever it is they do and get paid and that's it without having to go through accountants, PR consultants, image consultants and whoever else sponges money off them?

If I was a sportsman I'd like to see myself as a "Clubber Lang" type and do it all myself.

To be honest, an elite athlete needs to concentrate on being an elite athlete, and ideally should not be lying awake at night and wasting energy with the promotional or managerial / contracts stuff.

The problem is that they need to implicity trust the people that they delegate this to.

For many (like Khan) they choose a family member (I guess as they trust them) even though they may not be the best qualified for the job.

I think Khan needs a PR consultant because he's a twat and his mouth constantly gets him in trouble! He needs someone telling him what to say and what not to say because otherwise he just puts his foot in it.

There's a long long list of sports people who did it themselves assuming that meant more money in the pot then fucked up royally.
Would you expect a fighter to know the ins and outs of contracts for example ?
Would you expect a fighter to sit in a room with suits negotiating a contract rather than train / spar ?You would not believe what some fighters have signed over the years because they saw employing an expert as "wasted money".

You know, there are guys out there who do all the PR, get statements, help write articles / columns with the fighters and generally keep everything tidy - whom never feel the need to shout their name from the rooftops or get their mug into photos or videos, or jump through the ropes when they win.

They are virtually anonymous because they don't hanker for the limelight.

They certainly wont be giving their own interviews and sitting at the top table at press conferences wearing a suit.

A PR / manager should be in the shadows working away in a silent manner.

Just look at Al Haymon, he's the most powerful guy around and you'd never know what he looked like. By comparison, some people literally look after one, maybe two fighters and they are jumping in front of every camera everywhere.

I know what Haymon looks like but I get your point. He hires that Watson and his spotlight loving sons to be his public face.

Didn't Max Clifford say that 90% of his job was keeping stuff out of the papers for his clients? Loads of people do and say stupid things and they get judged (by the public) on the worst that they do; I'd not like it.

But often the boxer is expected to sign those contracts just before making it big and earning any good money; I imagine that for many the thought of someone charging upwards of £300 per hour when they have sweated for years to get into a decent position is a tough one to take on board; also, if the boxer has been with the same trainer/manager for years and get along it is difficult to imagine a time when they'd fall out, especially over money.

History tells us that when a boxer starts earning big money, then that is when the trouble starts.

They don't mind giving their trainer 5% of fornicate all, but if they get mega purses they look at ways to make savings (eg. Hatton - wanted to move Billy Graham form a percentage to a fixed fee when he was getting the mega dough - forgetting that Billy trained him for years for next to nowt).

Yep exactly, spot on as usual Gomez. I'm sure there is something dodgy with Haymon, whilst its good to be in the shadows I don't understand why he is completely invisible. Has he got something to hide? Probably not.

Great post people think a coach just appears when the bigger fights happen,I've seen myself training guys for 6-10 weeks for a fights in England or Wales and being paid £120-£150 that's just the way it is,I would spend more on the 2-3 days your away, not to mention the days you lose from work!

Boxers should have contracts as soon as they turn over not just before they hit the big time !
As for you having difficulty believing boxers fall out with trainers / managers over money - are you serious ?
Its the ONLY thing they fall out about !
Ive just had the biggest shiver up my back on a hot day.
Naseem Hamed !
Billy is spot on.
As for £300 an hour get real - its only £200 !!!

What I was trying to say; a boxer may have trained in the same gym, with the same people around them, the same trainers etc since they were 14/15 years old; they would probably have never argued seriously and so the boxer may not imagine a disagreement 'happening'; it's like a happy marriage, you can't imagine splitting up until you do.

Nothing wrong with a boxer being self managed, but before signing anything should consult with a contractual expert.
At least the fiasco of joint managers is now against the Board's rules.
