Entertaining One Sided Fights

Post by gilgamesh »

Last nights brutal war between Omar Figueroa and Arakawa got me thinking about one sided fights (fights where one guy was doing most of the damage, or winning most of the rounds) that were entertaining despite that.

A few that were always favorites of mine in this category were:

Floyd Mayweather vs Phillip Ndou: Mayweather seldom looked more brilliant than he did here, and was also seldom in the ring with a more game and aggressive opponent. Though Mayweather was dominant and stopped Ndou in the 7th, I thought Phillip really brought it to him and brought out the best in Floyd.

Erik Morales vs Paulie Ayala: I was always and will always be a huge Morales fan, so after the disappointing loss to Barrera in the rematch (I thought Morales won 115-113 BTW) it was very enjoyable for me to see him come back and put on a great performance against a game, but outgunned Paulie Ayala.

Ricky Burns last one was bizarre, getting schooled to schooling and forcing retirement

Duran/palomino was amazing.

For some reason I loved Jones and Hall. Richard only landed 7 or 8 punches but he took everything Jones had and Roy was pissed off and trying to get him out of there.

Mayweather vs Gatti
Tszyu vs Ruelas was pretty good until the last one or two rounds then it was hard to watch.
Heaps of entertaining one sided Prince Naseem fights.

I guess it comes down to watching what some guys do and being in awe of what they are able to do against a world class boxer and some guys are real showman so they're always entertaining.

I know I'm in the minority with these things, but I used to love to see the likes of Pernell Whittaker and Herol Graham absolutely ghosting around guys, landing at will while the opponent looked daft even trying to hit them.

Whitaker-Chavez.
No matter what the judges said, it was one-sided. And very entertaining.

Ali-Dunn was entertaining.

No one could fall quite like Dunn. :DDD

Watched that fight with my Dad and he got a big kick out of Ali winding up his right arm at the end.

Rocky Mattioli vs. Eckhard Dagge

Eckhard Dagge was telling everybody that he was better than Middleweight Champion - Carlos Monzon before
this bout, and wanted Carlos next after disposing of the Italian Boy.

Eckhard Dagge, "Carlos Monzon is retiring, because he's afraid to fight me."

Oh Boy, did Rocky do a number on the Deutschlander.
:salut:

If someone is able to upload this fight, it would greatly appreciated. Ive wanted to see this one for a wile now.

Cheers

Katsidis vs Earl is the first one that springs to mind.

Figueroa/Arakawa definitely fits.
Provodnikov/Gordon was a 6 rounder but quite entertaining though Provodnikov clearly won.

Rocky took it to the German in Round 4, and poured it on nearly finishing Eckhard near the
end of the Round.

A few brutal head-punches in Round 5 ended it.

Dagge went down, and was counted-out on his elbows.

He obviously had a highly inflated view of himself. Glad he got knocked into reality.

This is a great topic. There are really two ways to look at this: one-sided as in you love the display put on by the winning fighter, or one-sided as in the fight scoring wise was one-sided but actually competitive due to the effort put forth by the guy losing.

From the latter category:

Johnny Saxton-Luther Rawlings
Jose Stable-Charley Scott
Ken Norton-Larry Middleton
Zora Folley-Oscar Bonavena I
