This. I met Frazier many years ago when he was still fighting and he seemed no taller than me (5-9.5), but it was obvious that he was relaxed and somewhat slouching.theone wrote:Tyson was measured accurately on HBO at 5'11. Im built very similar to them and when I'm forced to stand perfectly straight Im 6'1. When I'm relaxed I look shorter.

No way is Haye 5'11"
He's over six foot but not by a huge amount. You can see him stack up against a ton of "smaller" fighters on Google and dwarf them but not necessarily in the height department. He looks to be smaller than Andy Murray who is supposedly a genuine 6'3" guy.
Groves is just under 6' and looks his height, yet Haye never really looks to be 3-4 inches taller. Having seen them both standing together literally in front of me, I'd say Haye isn't 6'3" but it's not really that important in the scheme of things.
Frazier and Tyson are both under 6'

Here is a clip from 1986 with Mike Tyson talking about his height.

He's in the 5'11" range, which is better than Michael Dokes, who was listed at 6'3", and at least two inches shorter.

I think Frazier was on the low end of 5'11. Men shrink as they get older from bad posture and deteriorating bone mass. I'm sure he probably shrunk to 5'10 or maybe even a tinge shorter in his old age.
From face-offs I've seen Haye's about 6'2 but a naturally skinny 6'2.

Suppose you just walked out of the Amazon jungles for the last 35 years and saw Mike Tyson here on tv for the first time. How tall would you think he is?

surprised you with his reach."

Hopefully I have this correct, recall reading about it somewhere.

Hard to tell exactly, but I met him several times and Mike was probably between 6-2 and 6-3.loaded_gloves wrote:What makes you say that? Dokes always looked huge to me. A man who often seemed bigger than his listed height and seemed to loom over people was Tim Witherspoon. I seem to recall this being written about a few times.

crusader: thanks, tyson looks 5 10.5 there
"He`s never fought anyone like me, someone with a strong jab who can box and is not going in there just to survive. Do you think I`m going to walk into the roundhouse punches of a guy who`s 5-8? Everyone else has counted me out. I don't feed into that. As far as him being invincible is concerned, on Oct. 16, I'll just have to prove that wrong . . . Come Oct. 16, I'm going to shock the world. Any expert who says I'm not ready for Tyson is no expert at all. I've gone through hell in 15 fights. I don't know this Tyson the way you guys talk about him. I know Tyson from way back when."" - Tyrell Biggs
Holyfield stated a few years ago ( after his fights against tyson) that tyson is only 5-9! on the other hand holy claims to be 6-2 , but hes never 5 inches taller than tyson imo.
someone here once postetd tyson was meassured 5 8.5 by police and sometimes he really looks short, definately short than 5 11.5..
i think tyson and frazier were both taller than 5-8 , but not what they were acclaimed to be. They both were not 5 11.5, maybe they were 5-10.

Yet oddly enough, Holyfield looks taller than Dokes in all the press photos.
Re: Joe Frazier: Height-Check please!
Yeah, especially against someone like a George Chaplin, or LYnn Ball, but someone like Tex Cobb, he seems a bit short. He's not the height of a Page, or Witherspoon, who were more like a legit 6'3".loaded_gloves wrote:What makes you say that? Actually Spoon towered over Page. Page had freakishly long arms but didn't look that tall. Although then again he seemed to be another slouching type, so who knows.

Larry Holmes must have shrunk prematurely. He was 6'4 in his 20s and 30s and 6'3 in his 40s.dempseyfire wrote:I think Frazier was on the low end of 5'11. Then there is Foreman. He magically went from 6'3 when he was in his 20s to 6'4 when he was in his 40s.

Boxrec lists Joe Frazier's reach at "73 inches/185 cm"Brutu wrote: ↑28 Jul 2013, 12:00 According to Joe Frazier's 1996 autobiography SMOKIN' JOE(with Phil Berger).
He was very specific about his height at least at age 21.
page 36,
"Five feet eleven and one-half inches tall"
he also listed his reach at "seventy-one inches"
which is shorter
then the reach boxrec lists it as.

Re: Joe Frazier: Height-Check please!
I know from the book Bad Intentions it was stated there was an orchestrated effort to make Mike Tyson taller than he was, that he was more 5'8.5" than 5'11" in height.
In the beginning his management team would make arguments that because he was so short he can generate more power punching upwards, etc--- but after a while the narrative changed to say that he wasn't as short as people thought he was.
I know men shrink over time but if BoxRec lists Roy Jones Jr as 5'11" in height then clearly Tyson is in reality 5'8"-5'9" in height, so the book was accurate at least in that particular subject.
I remember quite a long time ago there was a thread about Harry Wills and how tall he actually was because he was listed as short as 6'0" but as much as 6'5", so there was a pretty lengthy search over time by us forum posters to determine his true height.
If my memory recollects we all basically determined he had to be somewhere between 6'3"-6'4", which would have made him rather large for the time period. But yes height and weight statistics on the website are not accurate.
