Hagler vs Leonard: 3 More Rounds?

Post by elmersalsa »

If there were 3 more rounds in that fight, would Leonard take the title or Hagler wins it by a razor thin margin? It looked to me that Ray was losing gas by the 12th. He would have been stopped if 3 more rounds. What you guys think?

If the fight was 15 rounds leonard would have trained/planned and fought for a fifteen round match. It would have been a different performance from leonard....if the fight happened as it did and after the 12th round the ref said...'3 more to go guys' hagler would have stopped leonard or taken over...if the fight was fought as a fifteen rounder leonard would have won again...leonard was the master...

I have seen the fight so many times and I still don't see how Leonard won. If it was fifteen rounds Hagler would have gotten ahead on the cards. Then again, the outcome was controversial, if it was fifteen it may of went Leonard's way anyways. Las Vegas judges are not historically the best to rely on.

Arguably Ray's other two greatest victories (Hearns and Benitez) took place in the championship rounds. Ray had extraordinary will to win, and I think he would have proved mentally tougher than Hagler in those rounds (I feel he did all the way through). He did look like he was tiring, but then if you look at some of his other fights, looking exhausted and then finding a second wind was a Leonard trademark.

If it had been scheduled for 15 then Hagler probably would've pissed around for longer before getting his $hit together too late.

I scored it 115-114 Hagler, (118-110 card aside) I've never found the decision horrifiying.

If 3 more rounds is just decreed at the end of the 12th then Hagler takes the SD.

Ray gave every ounce he had, if it was 15 from the beginning I imagine he would have held back a bit and conserved his energy. If they added 3 rounds at the end of the fight Hagler would have stopped him in 13 or 14.

There was a reason Leonard negotiated a 12-round fight. Hagler by decision or stoppage. I had him winning anyway . . . :witzend:

I believe Leonard negotiated a larger ring for the shorter 12 round fight.
As usual, a wise move by Sugar.

When you score a round, do you take into consideration making the other fighter miss, blocking, slipping and general defensive skill?
