Edgar "Mad Dog" Ross

Post by Dart340 »

Ross was one of those 70's fighters that us diehards know of, but whom generally flew under the national radar back in the day.
He was a guy with an interesting background- being a Tuscaloosa streetfighter talked into giving boxing a try by a local policeman who saw him fight and wanted to help keep him out of jail or keep him from getting shot. Ross was the centerpiece for a few years of the Ashlock stable in Orlando and made it to the edge of a title shot before being stopped by Tony Chiaverini in ten rounds in what was supposed to be a title eliminator and retired immediately afterwards.

There is no footage out there of him that I know of, which is strange in and of itself. I'm not sure whether the Chiaverini-Ross fight was televised or not (Bet Il Duce will tell me, though), but strange for a fight between legitimate top ten fighters in the late 70's to not be on anybody's tape or film list.

Anybody have any memories of Edgar Ross they want to add?

I figured you'd have something, Duce.

When was the last time a fight between top ten contenders in a higher weight division here in the U.S was not televised?

Chiaverini-Ross might be the answer.

In his obituary in the Tuscaloosa paper, they referenced the lingering dementia that afflicted him in his final years. He didn't fare well after his career ended.

I'd heard of him but never knew all of that. Just so sad. Thanks Dart.

Edgar Ross was a 'wild and hard drinking' kid when he was young.

Maybe the term 'Mad Dog' was related to "Mad Dog 20/20", the inexpensive
fruit liquor that made you go crazy.

Or possibly, Pete Ashlock needed a 'nick-name' for Edgar.
Probably just the latter. Thanks Duce.

And not a scrap of footage on Edgar Ross that anyone has....

Strange that a longtime Top Ten U.S Fighter from the 70's has nothing out there on him.

I've never seen any footage of him; maybe it's because it was jr. middle which wasn't prominent (just a guess).

My ribs still hurt from the shots I took from "Dog". A little weird but a good dude I always thought.
