Peter McCann was a brilliant amateur who succeeded in bringing back an ABA title to Birkenhead. He also had a short Career as a pro under the banner of Terry Lawless.
As an amateur he was to represent to North West Counties on a number of occasions and also represented his country as an international.
His professional career saw him take part in only eight contests but he was the winner in all of those except one – his last contest, during which he pulled ligaments in his shoulder that ultimately caused him to retire from boxing. A fully supportive member of the Merseyside Former Boxers Association and the following article is based on a personal interview with Peter during 2004.
“I had my First taste of boxing when I was nine years old, when I joined a gym and I was only 11 when I had my first contest. I was always interested in boxing and I joined the Willaston ABC in Birkenhead in 1956, and was with them until 1963 when I transferred to the Birkenhead ABC. I also had a single contest for the Star ABC in Liverpool where Billy Gamble was a trainer.
“There was no previous history of fighting in our family and I suppose the reason I became interested and wanted to be able to look after myself was because I came from a rather tough area and either you could after yourself or you could find yourself with a few problems”.
“Boxing gave me the chance to travel to places I would have had no chance of ever visiting and I suppose experiences like that help build your character and I give you a wider experience of life”.
I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it although on occasions life had a way of frightening the life out of you.
