Boxing in Prison.

OK fight fans lets talk about who were the best Prison Boxers.

I am thinking of fighters who either boxed amateur or professional whilst in prison.

The most famous may well be Light-Heavyweight contender James Scott who had many Professional fights whilst in The Big House.

I understand Sonny Liston and Ron Lyle both took part in many amateur prison bouts I think Dwight Muhammad Qawi might have also.

So fight fans can you think of any other Boxers who boxed whilst serving a prison sentance.

Also any memories, information or stories on this subject in general would be great.

Clifford Ettiene was supposedly untouchable in prison, mabey he can re establish himself now that hes goin back.

I've seen photos of Jack Johnson fighting bouts on prison grounds. Don't know if they were exhibitions or the real thing. Also, Jurgen Brahmer was let out of prison to fight in a scheduled bout.

Yes but it's very rare.

There have been many interviews and articals on Scott and Boxing in Rahway State Prison over the years if I find any I will post them.

Interesting to hear that you live so near quite a historical Boxing place.

Rahway State Prison is the former and still most commonly used name for the East Jersey State Prison, a prison facility of the state of New Jersey's Department of Corrections.

The prison is actually located in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. However, because it is located less than a half-mile from the town of Rahway, it was originally named after that town. The name was changed in 1988 at the request of the citizens of Rahway.

The prison is perhaps best known nationally for the fact that three high-profile professional boxers were at one time incarcerated there. The most famous of these men was former middleweight contender Rubin Carter, featured in the 1999 movie Hurricane, but the best was probably Dwight Muhammad Qawi, who became a two-time world champion after leaving Rahway. A contemporary of Qawi, James Scott, was a title contender of the same era who fought many times inside the prison itself, including a fight against Qawi in 1981.

On November 24, 1971, a riot took place at the prison that resulted in several deaths and injuries to both inmates and prison personnel.

As of May 2003, the prison holds 2,099 inmates in maximum, medium and minimum security sections.

does anybody know if theres actually boxing circuits in prison like in that one movie? not professional but maybe semi-pro circuits that happen in prison?
