AMIR KHAN JOKE FIGHT

Post by MightyWarrior »

What the hell was that all about? They're meant to be giving him a ring education - what exactly is the point of putting him in with a guy 2 or 3 weight divisions below?

It's ridiculous - put him in with competent journeymen, yes - but does he really need a huge weight advantage too?

These sort of farces do him no good at all.

Complete contempt for the fans by Sports Netwrok yet again. Utter crap.

I think at this point its all about exposure and confidence building but yeh there is no excuses for Warren to put him in with a guy from the lower weights.
Could it be that after seeing Khan extended the full 4 last time out Mr Warren wanted to guarantee an inside the distance win so as not to let some water get squirted onto the fire?
Probably......but lets face it Warren isn't exactly known for fair or competative match making now is he!!!

Get the feeling FW is not too sure bout that chin is he....I mean, can the guy be THAT good? Maybe he is, but Frank aint taking any chance is he?

Open to a decent counter as he wades in. With one sided fights like this, he'll remain that way.

But how long will he be fed these sorts of opponents? It's a fine line really isnt it? Too many fights like this and he'll get a shock when he finally steps up. But I know... still early days.

And let's face it, the stoppage was definately premature. Now I know the guy had no chance of winning and I dont want to see anyone take unnecesary punishment but I have no doubt that the guy could have lasted the distance, he never looked like going to ground.

I wouldn't say it was a premature stoppage, I told myself as soon as that combo hit against the ropes that the ref would should/would stop the fight.

Good handspeed from Khan but a bit off balance at times, not bad for his 3rd fight I suppose, no doubt his next 5 fights will also be against journey men too.

What a set of moaners its his 3rd fight what do you expect. Great hand speed but Khans power is obviously not going to be his forte unless he grows stronger at 140.

Bit too dangerous I think.

I really agree with Mighty Warrior on this. How much is Khan's early professional journey going to be based on learning and development, and how much is it going to be based on PR and ratings booster?

Yes he's only 18, and yes this is only his 3rd fight, but in all honesty what's he learnt from tonight? Hit the opponent at your will? jeej has a real point that he could get a mindset that opponent's don't fight back.

Saying all that, Khan is a REAL prospect. I just hope he's not cojoled (spelling?) into being a publicity stunt, with English and WBU titles after just 12 fights making him the finished article in the public's eye

Yes, the 'referee' obviously knew which side his bread was buttered. It was to be expected.

I was cringing shortly before Gethin was to begin his ringwalk, so I have no qualms he was pulled out 'early'.

As for The Golden Child: he had excellent speed, combinations, accuracy. He didn't look a puncher but that shouldn't matter that much - since he has the three previous variables plus the all important invariable - time - on his side.

I also approved of his ring attire. Tartan can be tacky, but they pulled it off well. 8)

I thought Khan looked less sharp tonight than ive ever seen him. His punches didn't really flow and snap as much. Im not sure about his trainer, how much can he teach him?? Should an unknown be training a top prospect like this?? I don't think so...

It's just a delicate situation. I mean an unbeaten prospect is ALWAYS gonna be more marketable than a fighter that took an early risk and gained a loss, but look at Hatton before the Tszyu fight, a lot of people were mocking his whole career cos of his unbeaten record and lack of decent opponents.

Boxing is a business, make no qualms about it, but they need to find a fine balance between making sure the fat cats get their big pay days, but also to ensure that the boxer has proper development and takes the right fights at the right points in his career.

Still, like I (and others) said before, it was only his 3rd fight. I'd like to think he'd be fighting someone half decent by his 10th though.

We shall see...

Ineed it was only his third fight. Look back at any succesful seasoned pro's record and compare the fighters that they faced. Most fighters that get the kind of exposure that Khan is getting will face a few stiffies and journeymen early on. It's down to Warren now to plan Khan's career properly.

I cringe everytime I hear commentators/promoters/managers/pundits etc saying that Khan wants to beat Naseem's record and get a world title before Naseem did. What will that prove? He could fight next week for the WBU and probably win it, but as we know it means fornicate all.

I'd rather he went the proper course, domestic, area, English, British, Commonwealth then world.

What was the crack with ITV anyway? If I was Warren i'd be pissed off. ITV4 which you can only get if you have freeview or SKY (which to be fair most people have) but ITV4???? Why not ITV1 where most people will scan through and see it - I didn't see one advert in the weeks build up to say it was going to be on 4. COME ON ITV - GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!

I can just imagine his opponent when he fights for a 'world' title.... TBA for sure and for the vacant WBU 'world title!'.
Please excuse me if I'm nolonger excited by Khan... some may call me a hater but what we saw last night wasn't boxing but a farce.

Thats true... at least Audely wasn't fighting middleweights. Khan looks like he is fighting guys at least two divisions below him.
Interesting thing is that he's not blowing them away that quickly, either he's pulling his punches or he can't punch that hard.

Most fighters do not face fighters that are divisions below them!. Look at Ali's early opposition!... Khan says he wants to be a legend so he should be judged by that measure. Also he will learn absolutely nothing from fights like last night.... he will just most likely get into bad habits that may catch up with him eventually if he fights a 'live' opponent. Which judging by Warrens form may well not happen for another 4 or 5 years.

Maybe Kevin Mitchell was right about Amirs punching ability , he landed flush last night and Steve Gethin did not touch down.

If Khan had real power then he should be taking these guys out... especially when their about two weight divisions below him.

That fight stank from the moment it was advertised to the second the ref thought Khan would have to go 4rnds again.

Don’t give the bollocks about Steve Gethin`s well being, he should never have been Amir Khans opponent anyway, he was always booked to be knocked around the ring from the moment he took the fight. :-?

The stoppage was early, in the previous round he’d been in the same situation and fired back with a left hook right hand that just missed, and he was firing back this time with the same combo.

Amir Khan does not posses big KO power that is clear, over the 4rnd distance the opponent can weather them. Even the much smaller guys.
When he steps up to 6-8rnd fights he should get the TKO`s on the accumulation of punches.

This is as bad as the Audley farce with the BBC, but without the big ME….but then again you’ve got Duke McKenzie doing that for him. :TU:

I do like Barry McGuigan since he has moved to ITV, he is talking the truth more than he did on Sky, he is not trying to tell us any different to what we know, he made it clear to the viewer that Gethin was only a featherweight and Khan would need an opponent the same weight or at least who would come to throw punches back. :TU:

As much as I respect Duke McKenzie as a fighter he really needs to stop arse-hole scraping to the house fighter, his commentary is hysterically funny anyway without his after fight analysis….tell it as it is Duke.

So Khan had the Velcro tartan on his shorts last night, in England it was the union jack, in Wales it was the red Velcro, if he ever goes to Ireland it will be the green shamrock on the jacket and shorts…but at least that will match the colour of the gum shield he never changes…no union jack, red, or tartan on that.

Well all very predictable really.

Khan showed the usual good speed etc but that's easy to do when your fighting a journeyman TWO DIVISIONS below yourself I would imagine?

Yes, he is still a young novice fighter but these fights seem to have more to do with paydays and PR than learning his trade. It's impossible to judge Khan yet until he fights a fighter in his own weight division.

As for the stoppage it looked premature to me, okay it wasn't me taking those shots but they looked less than concusive shots to me. The first thing that flashed through my mind when the referee stopped the fight was "If it had been Khan taking those shots, would the fight have been stopped?".

The story continues.....

Come on, someone at least near his own weight division is not too much to ask. He ends up looking like a bully in there, with this sort of ultra cautious matchmaking. He's a top prospect, give him sonething to work with at least.

I disagree with those who say he doesn't have power. He is super fast and power comes with speed. He throws his body into his punches and for a lad only nineteen, still growing, still to fill out, I think when he hits 25 and above he will be awsome. As for not knocking the guy out, well if the ref hadn;t hav stopped it he might have. Once he steps up to six rounders it will be a real test and revelation of his abilities. As it stands, Khan is doing everythnig right. Yes these frst few fights have been very easy, but FW needs to create a benchmark - no point sticking Khan with too tougher competition early on. Compared to the other fighters he has fought he is totally inexperienced in the pro game.
