Freddie Pendleton is a legend in this category.

This got him noticed and he went onto a world title.

Howard Clarke was 26-10-2 pre his shot at Vargas then 1-68 after so kind of did both. But at Area/Masters level like Naylor you've got Ryan Clark, Tom Glover, Jimmy Vincent, Paul Wesley.

I think Francisco Quiroz might stand out though

Surprised nobody's mentioned Johnny Nelson - lost his first three and was something like 5-5 after 10.

Some guys get a title shot off beating 1 contender, whilst others toil away after a bad start to get up the rankings and earn a title shot. Usually the guys that have the 1 win against a contender don't go on to be champions, and they are given the title shot to showcase the champion, like Vargas v Clarke.

I remember Kelvin Seabrooks being a guy who fought tough men from the start of his career, then got himself a title shot, and made himself a good champion

Rocky Balboa. Think he was 30-30 before his fight with Apollo!

At one point Joey Vegas was 11-6-1, now he's 16-6-1 after a five fight winning streak and three of opponents had decent records (14-1, 21-1, 12-0).

I know sanctioning bodies rankings are never popular but Vegas is ranked 11th by the WBC now, fair play to him.

After a rather slow start to his career Kirino Garcia turned his carrer around and was probably a top 10 light middleweight

Emanuel Augustus a 'journeyman' (or imo a waste of world class talent) beat Jon Thaxton for a trinket and won the IBA World title :TU:

Did you see his fight against Andreas Panayi over here? Panayi had been on a bit of a roll, and was tough , but looking at it now it was a calculated risk that back fired.

Good call, I remember reading an article which stated in his early fights he was living rough, and a lot of times got in ring having barely anything to eat all day,

Almost forgot about Steve Little http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=543&cat=boxer
He was a light punching , good chin boxer. He scored for me one of the biggest upsets on these shores ever when he outpointed Michael Nunn, in terms of natural ability Nunn was way, way above Little. But on the night an over confident and maybe undertrained Nunn got outpointed by the hard working Little.
