The simple answer is the WBA are a bunch of c***s, but I thought Geale beat Sturm for the WBA Super title?
As I understand it, Sturm was the WBA champ and Golovkin was the interim champ, then they made Sturm the Super champ and upgraded Golovkin to the full WBA title, but why is Geale not WBA champ now, after beating Sturm? Did he give it up to rematch Mundine?
Why is Barker v Geale not for the WBA strap as well as IBF?

You don't have fights forced on you by the WBA if you are the super champ I think they have it so unified champs don't drop their belt because they are having mandatories forced on them. No idea why he dropped it.

I might be wrong by the look of it. According to the ever reliable Wikipedia he was ordered to defend against Golovkin within 4.5months and didn't.

Correct as Geale chose Mundine over Golovkin, he was stripped of the title, Sturm however successfully managed to avoid Golovkin while he was the interim champ without danger of his title being taken away.jameswilson wrote:I might be wrong by the look of it. Yeah but that's because there was some kind of corruption going on between Sturm and the WBA. Im sure I remember there being some letter or something that came out regarding Sturm paying the WBA 200k or something along those lines in return for him getting to keep hold of his belt.The_Don1 wrote:Correct as Geale chose Mundine over Golovkin, he was stripped of the title, Sturm however successfully managed to avoid Golovkin while he was the interim champ without danger of his title being taken away.jameswilson wrote:I might be wrong by the look of it. Daniel Geale beat Felix Sturm for the WBA Super title while successfully defending his IBF title, but his mandatory defence would have been against Gennady Golovkin, however Geale choose to scratch an itch by fighting Aussie rival Anthony Mundine and make a few quid out of it, but the WBA did not like and took his "Super" title off him and made GGG champion as he continues to spark everyone out, mind you Golvokin must be due a mandatory soon?

I don't think many would even want to be his mandatory. The guy is an absolute animal.IRLangmaid25 wrote:Daniel Geale beat Felix Sturm for the WBA Super title while successfully defending his IBF title, but his mandatory defence would have been against Gennady Golovkin, however Geale choose to scratch an itch by fighting Aussie rival Anthony Mundine and make a few quid out of it, but the WBA did not like and took his "Super" title off him and made GGG champion as he continues to spark everyone out, mind you Golvokin must be due a mandatory soon?

Unless there is a few 000s on the end of the paycheck for being brave/mad/desperate (delete as appriopiate) for choosing to go in with him. I do agree is a pretty tasty fighter with his ability to deliver a destructive knockout regardless of the fact that maybe ahead or behind on the cards makes him that dangerous fighter that you elude. But everyone seems to focus on that chilling knockout power and somewhat overlooking the fact that he is a very well seasoned and schooled amateur with over 350 amateur bouts and an Olympic Silver medal and world honours which for me makes his power even more impressive.brian13 wrote:I don't think many would even want to be his mandatory. As mentioned, Geale was stripped by the WBA at the back end of last year for choosing an optional defence vs Mundine rather than facing Golovkin. A pretty comical move given Felix Sturm was allowed to avoid GGG for over 2 years.....
In theory, Martin Murray is Golovkin's mandatory, as he is still the WBA interim champ. I'm sure he'd be game for it, and to be honest, outside the other world titleholders, it would probably be GGG's toughest test.

I heard that Golovkin's team made Murray's camp an offer to fight in the uk after hearing of Murray's visa issues and they said no.Jack B wrote:As mentioned, Geale was stripped by the WBA at the back end of last year for choosing an optional defence vs Mundine rather than facing Golovkin.
