Liam Smith Vs Erick Ochieng

Post by mcato »

There was some doubts if this fight was gonna happen as news came out Smith had to defend his Commonwealth belt against Sai on the same day at the Copperbox. However it seems like he will face Ochieng in his home town in Liverpool on the 21st Sept. It looks like Smith has all the advantages on his side as his brother is also fighting on this bill. I think it still will be a very tough fight.

I remember the first time I seen Liam fight - on burns vs Martinez bill where he laboured to a draw with carruthers and didn't think he'd go far but has IMO proved he is a capable fighter and I think I'll back him to beat ochieng.

Yeah I heard the press conference for the Ryder BJS card and Warren said Smith was defending the Commonwelath title there. Hearn won purse bids and also Liam has been promoting the fight on twitter.

Hope its on look and evenly matched fight on paper neither lad has had a serious test ( though Ochiengs fight with Nick Quigley was quality !!!) Be a shame to stop a fighter who has been very inactive fighting for the British Title in his hometown.

Am looking forward to it, a big test for both. It's a pick 'em fight but I'm edging towards Smith.

Smith has come on leaps & bounds & this fight has happened at the right time for him as he is no more rounded & seasoned. Ochieng is a solid pro & will push smith all the way for a close points win

Erick looks very talented and counters very well but does not impose himself so well; if Liam pins him to the ropes it will impress the judges no matter how many counters are landed. Fighting off the ropes to win fights is for James Toney and no one else.

:TU: and a couple of others (Mike Ayala) out of thousands and thousands of boxers who get the loss for keeping on the ropes even when they're doing well.

It would of been interesting to see the points scores for Ochieng vs Quigley. Erick learnt a lot from his loss to Robinson. Robinson's fight has helped him so much. Smith will be a stiff test.

I know its sometimes hard to be motivated against lower level guys but Ochieng didnt look too great in his last outing in my opinion , think Smith will beat him on points .
