Jim Corbett: Is this his full record or close?

Post by OleBlackDog »

I know a lot of records are hard to verify and incomplete on account of the difficulty but is this likely Corbett's full record or close to it? 21 fights? Is he rumored to have many more? Thanks for any replies.

I don't know, but you should post this in Record Queries also perhaps.

Pretty sure there are several fights that he had that are missing. Unfortunately, records were not kept like they would be later on. In the book "In This Corner" Tommy Loughran said that Corbett mentioned to him that he had 39 fights in his career.

I am guessing that most of the missing fights were not major fights, and that he did not lose any of them.

Do a search for "Cyber Boxing Zone -- Jim Corbett" in google, or, better, buy Adam Pollack's bio of Corbett, it includes as full a record of Corbett as you can find.

Senya is right, the CBZ record is a great place to start. Back then many localities could not legally have professional boxing matches for money, so many fighters got by through staging exhibitions.

Okay, thank you, gentlemen. I thought it looked a little odd that he fought 17 years and that's all there was.

Corbett, like many champions of his era, fought almost exclusively exhibition matches. I doubt, though, that a complete record of any fighter from those times will ever fully be done. John L. SUllivan, for instance, is alleged to of had over 500 kayos in his career (exhibitions included) but we dont have records that are complete to show that figure as being correct. Corbett, far as I know of, had exhibitions until he was 59 years of age.
