Worst British ref?

Post by lefty »

In homage to the world class officiating in the main event tonight, who do you think is the worse ref on these shores? For me it's either Ian John Lewis or O'Connor.

Terry O'Connor is the worst referee I have ever seen.

Lets have a think about after a serious sleep and a reasoned debate with some of the more learned fellows remembering us of some things.

I was hoping for a bit more sleep and someone with a bit more learning but no disrespect; it's a knee jerk thing really; what we've just seen is the worst thing ever; it weren't nut I'm too tired. :TU:

I didnt say it was the worst thing ever but he's been guilty of doing this kind of thing over and over again! It's not like it's a one or anything. Also the learning thing is a bit patronising mate to be honest.

Before tonights fight I always thought O'Connor was terrible, but not necessarily responsible for the worst stuff I have seen in my time as a boxing fan. Roger Tilleman cautioning Robin Reid for punching Sven Ottke in the face and the ref in Danny Williams's fight vs Konstantin Airich where he kept taking 2 points off Williams for any infringement he made without a warning are right up there near the top.

Tonight tho I think I can add O'Connor carrying a fighter to the corner after waving it off then changing his mind to the list.

Another O'Connor moment of mine that I'v mentioned before but some may not be familiar with was his performance in Danny Williams v Matt Skelton 1. Skelton was fouling over and over again, using the head and holding behind the head while punching. He must have been given about 10 warnings by O'Connor, was the guy ever going to start taking points off?

God it's the same people who say he stops it too early are now saying its too late!!!

Reffing isn't as easy as it looks. We've had some quality refs in Francis, o'connel & Davies, foster who rise above pressure.
Can fans imagine how it must feel placed inbetween two fighters were a single blow can damage somebody's health ?
Look at smith v buckland tonight . Unexpected but certainly not shocking In terms of what these fighters are capable off.
Happy for smith he had alot riding on this & is a true gent!
& has plenty to offer just like buckland still has imo

Surely you can grasp the point that I am trying to make about O'Connor (assuming you are directing your' comment at me and my complaining about him.)

He stops it too early when the 'away' fighter is the one in the slightest bit of trouble. He stops it too late when the home fighter is staggering around on queer street.

The type of referee I like is one that stops fighters at the correct time without appearing to (based on the evidence over the years) favour the home fighter.

Half true, he was being slated for stopping visitors early but allowing Brits to continue, I think the Khan fight was used as an example.

The man has good days and bad days; he is not an outright cheat like some seem to be and no one has died on his watch. He has stopped too soon and made sure a World Championship changed hands with no doubts as to the superior boxer

Well said. If it was that easy everyone would do it and no mistakes would be made.
If there's always controversy then that tells you how pressurised a situation reffing a pro show is.

Clint Magnum has been on every thread trying to restore O'Connors unrepairable reputation.

He will deliberately miss the point that officials such as him are not allowing a level playing field in the ring.
He will not care how this latest episode is seen as just the latest in a series of blatant one-sided biased performances by a British official who is supposed to be impartial.
Following that, the damage to British boxings reputation abroad doesn't need to be acknowledged at all.

Well, I watch from overseas with some of my non-British friends, and between the Jim Watts commentary (which is broadcast abroad) and Terry O'Connors of the world, there's a lot of cynicism regarding some of the nature of the British boxing scene.

And it doesn't and shouldn't be this way.
It takes years to undo the damage so casually inflicted.

But then, apologists can be found for almost anything in the world, I suppose...

That's an excuse though as there are good refs out there that dont constantly make massive errors/ being seen to be bias, etc.

Tbf, O' Connor is generally a better judge than he is a referee, from a cursory glance at things.

This talk of bias, "MASSIVE" mistakes and ref's licenses being revoked. OConnor made no massive mistake.
He seperated them at the right times during the fight, let the fight flow for the three rounds and stopped the fight at the correct time in the fourth. This whole carrying Clev to the corner is a nonsense. He jumped in and laid hands on Clev, probably it would seem to stop the fight, but the bell rang as he did so so he turned Clev to the corner and instructed the official at ringside that the fight wasn't stopped. Clev was not staggering about or semi conscious during the minute rest in his corner. He was hurt and was trying to motivate himself. He stood up and was probably gonna try and survive for majority of the next round but Kovalev caught him again and finished him like a champ does. The ref saw Clev was game but in danger of being hurt again so stopped the fight.
Why are people looking for controversy when there was none. Clev's team aren't complaining, Kovalev's arent and the fans got to see a cracking fight finished safely and decisively with no distasteful questions of an early stoppage. A good fight on a great weekend of boxing.

It is obvious to me that people are getting on O`Connors case for non boxing reasons.

I am convinced that if he did not wear grandad slacks that are pulled up to just below the belly button, with the tell tale pie rounded nasty mound in full view, then people would cut the guy some slack.
