Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
That post was part of a ruse to influence gambling odds, it is inconsistent with all my other posts.
Frightening that you remember that one post I wrote quite a while ago though. Do you have pics of me on your computer?
Incidentally, I had money on Kov by KO tonight, as Riddick Blowe can attest.

He never did ..did he ?crusader wrote:I thought you'd be surprised given that you earlier claimed that this had Lacy-Calzaghe written all over it, with Cleverly being Calzaghe.loaded_gloves wrote:Cleverly looked absolutely ludicrous prefight.
None of his behaviour suggested confidence, it showed a dangerous level of self-delusion.
No one should be surprised how badly he was massacred given his total lack of opposition beforehand and his embarrassing overconfidence when facing the deadly Kovalev.
A Prescott/Khan type showing from NC.

It wasn't a serious post pedigree, money on Kov.

Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
Haha I can confirm that this is true. Overhand did indeed try to incite some pro-Cleverly bias to get the oddsmakers thinking, as did I initially, just before the lines were set and I got my money on Kovalev. Not sure if this ever really works though and probably won't be doing it again.loaded_gloves wrote:That post was part of a ruse to influence gambling odds, it is inconsistent with all my other posts.

No, I just don't find it difficult to remember posts that were made a week or two ago; I've got a good memory.loaded_gloves wrote:That post was part of a ruse to influence gambling odds, it is inconsistent with all my other posts.

He is totally right to call me out on that though, I'd have done the same, it's just I had a quite whacky strategy behind that particular post.
All part of the tangled confusing joy of boxrec.

It did seem a bit strange to me that you'd have so much faith in Cleverly.

I don't know how well it worked but the odds today were unbelievable. Kov by KO 25/1 across most of the first half. Insane and only slightly so in hindsight.

The first and second knockdown he wasn't as gone as Khan in that fight in my opinion. Khan was staggering about badly, whereas Clev did have his legs under him to a point.WelshJack wrote:Clev was gone it was like Khan v Garcia.jameswilson wrote:And 10 seconds before the first knockdown where he smiled and waved him in.Spiker wrote:I wouldn't be rubbing the salt in if Cleverly had been a bit less cocky in the build up and even entering the ring.
Fair play to you for coming on here straight away btw mate, you backed your lad in a big way before the fight and it shows a certain amount of character to immediately come on and talk candidly and just admit you were wrong straight afterwards.

That was only ever a lazy comparison. Nothing suggested Clev was good enough to lace Joes boots.mrpedigree wrote:Cracks me up when posters on here said Clev was gonna be as good as another certain welsh man ...NO FCUKING CHANCE!
It's a shame but I thought tonight could end up being Nathan's 'Enzo-Haye' moment. Different levels.

Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
Haha. It was similar to the Haye v Enzo in another way. After the Enzo v Haye fight they were making out like Enzo didn't get the plan fight and got caught, and would have had a chance had he gone later into the fight. In this one they make out like Clev was going to suddenly start winning rounds and dancing around the ring. It seemed evident to me that Kovalev was not expending much energy at all after the first 2 rounds. That fight could happen 10 times and Kovalev would win 10 times in my opinion.lillywhite14 wrote:That was only ever a lazy comparison. What I found most notable prior to Clev going down was that Kovalev was beating him without having to go all out or throw tons of punches. It seemed like Kovalev was the superior boxer, not just the superior puncher, and that he could get the better of Clev in multiple ways.
Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
Really glad this fight happened it's the kind of crossroads fight we don't see enough off. We have a much better idea of both guys levels now. Kovalev looks like a great example of a puncher that can use it intelligently. He's definitely the sort to carry his power into later rounds. His solid armature background shines through.

The really impressive thing for me about Sergey is his balance and his accuracy in landing big shots from awkward angles. He can just turn his hand over last minute and whip over a great hook that finds the target, he is very adaptable and of course is a deadly finisher.J-C wrote:Really glad this fight happened it's the kind of crossroads fight we don't see enough off. I would LOVE for Froch to step up to lightheavy and fight him. As much as I love Carl, this guy has the best chance of stopping him out of anyone (although I definitely wouldn't bet on it). Would be so awesome.
Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
After the first minute you knew Cleverly wasn't going to win. Cleverly's power is surprising poor. He didn't earn the title he had. As I said before a win against Kovalev would finally make Cleverly a legitimate world champion.
Cleverly was simply outclassed in every department. There's no point him going for a rematch again Kovalev, he could never beat him. Nathan was exposed badly last night.

Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
Good point, Cleverly's lack of power himself didn't get much talk in the build up. He's not got the power to back up Kovalev and is always gonna get hit himself. Didn't like all the pre-fight attitude too. Talking Hopkins (again) in the last two days before the fight now seems like genuine delusion.Exoddus wrote:After the first minute you knew Cleverly wasn't going to win. Though Kovalev was better than I expected too, his accuracy is underrated; I thought he'd armed a couple of shots but watching the replays in slow motion he dug a nice little left in to the body too that I didn't notice on tv...

As someone who believed the Russian flattered to deceive prior to this, I've got to say: Fvck yes.
That's the way you win a world title.
Again, he doesn't look particularly concussive, but he's one of those punchers who just go straight through the other fella--when Cleverly was doing the ear-muff thing in lieu of defence the Russian simply punched straight through it.
One bad man.

allegedly should have run in with his emails.
Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
His power is different to guys like Hearns and Mcllellan. Those guys would absolutely starch people whereas Kovalev's punches are really heavy and clubbing. The only way I could describe it is if someone filled his gloves with sand or something! Golovkin has the same kind of power at middleweight I think.Datsue wrote:As someone who believed the Russian flattered to deceive prior to this, I've got to say: Fvck yes.

Yep, Tszyu was another. Even Chavez Jr - not too many pure KO's on his record, but those he hit, stayed hit, if you see what I mean.columbo wrote:His power is different to guys like Hearns and Mcllellan. I also remember Danny Williams talking about Vitali and saying that every shot he hit him with was hurting him - not explosive in a KO sense, but damaging nonetheless.
Re: Cleverly v Kovalev
Yeah they're the kind of punches where putting your gloves up to block doesnt help because of the weight of them! You just end up with your own gloves slamming into your head!Deserter wrote:Yep, Tszyu was another.
