Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
I think Roy win by UD 116-112
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
Spinks for me.
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
Yeah I gotta go with Spinks . I'd pick Jones against several greats this is not one of them. Jones loses UD and if he doesn't fight in safety mode he gets knocked out
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
I think Spinks would win, but I think both would be cautious in this one.
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
Jones pretty comfortably for me.
I'd just like to point out that some people talk about it like Jones has to avoid Spinks power, lest he go down the minute he's touched. The exaggeration aside, I think Spinks would have to worry more about cracking shots coming at him, and at 175 and at his best, those shots from Jones fire off fast from all kinds of angles.

I know Roy has power but I don't think he has the power to take Spinks out . Spinks was never down as a light heavyweight and Roy wasnt the same puncher at the weight.
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
Well I think his power, which I'd admit wasn't the same as it was at middle and 168, was more than enough to take someone out when they don't see the shot. The speed is the main thing here for me really, it sets up all the rest.
I can't see Spinks dealing with it well.
And I mean, Roy could also win on points. It's not like one has to be knocked out or the other. Roy has to not get caught, but Spinks also has to be concerned. Jones didn't really go into full safety mode, as in not even throwing, until he got caught by Tarver the second time. At his best, when he first came up to 175, I don't think Spinks would even be able to touch him seriously enough to cause this to happen.
Of course if he did, all this could change. But I'm looking at what I consider the most likely scenario in my estimation.

Timing beats speed. Spinks was able to beat guys more athletic than himself via excellent timing and precision punching. Would be the same story here.Bobbyptsd wrote:Jones pretty comfortably for me.

Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
He never fought, let alone beat anyone as fast as Jones in his prime. Timing can beat speed, but you're speaking as if it automatically does.
I'm not saying he couldn't time Jones, just that I don't think it's the most likely scenario.

Dempseyfire, I agree with you that Spinks wins this one, probably by late stoppage, but I'm curious as to who think Spinks beat that was more athletic. MS used to train incredibly hard for fights.

Spinks by a mid rounds KO. Just a better fighter.
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
Worse offense, worse defense, worse footwork, less clever, less versatile, more predictable, much slower. But, yeah, he's a better fighter for me. Blah-blah-blah.
Re: Roy Jones jr vs . Michael Spinks in light heavyweight
I'll add to that...
He's also got better punch resistance, more skill, more cunning, more heart and a better career...

More skill, more cunning? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'll add to that...
being called a Roy Jones and fighting at middleweight and light heavyweight, automatically eliminates you from being a good fighter.

See?
And had this fighter's name been not Roy Jones - http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer , but Ray Jones or Roy Johnson or something, he might have hoped for a draw with Marvin Hagler, or at least not such bad a beating from Hagler, but when his parents learned he was going to become a boxer, it was too late.

Not that Jones ever would have taken the fight, but Spinks stops him.

I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I always thought of Spinks as a bit of an overachiever; he had good natural speed and power but IMO he was never particularly impressive to watch; he just always found ways to win with his complete skillset. I think Qawi, Eddie Mustapha, and probably Marvin Johnson were more natural athletes than Michael was.Seamus wrote:Dempseyfire, I agree with you that Spinks wins this one, probably by late stoppage, but I'm curious as to who think Spinks beat that was more athletic. I remember having watched one of the Holmes telecasts and during the pre-fight Tompkins said Spinks is so good you need experts to tell you how good he is or something like that.dempseyfire wrote:I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I always thought of Spinks as a bit of an overachiever; he had good natural speed and power but IMO he was never particularly impressive to watch; he just always found ways to win with his complete skillset.
