Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I gotta think if a 150 year old Holyfield can give Valuev a hard night surely a prime rock can batter him into submission.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
If you look at Valuev's boxrec you will see halfway through his career, when he was still a curiousity in his native Russia, he fought a man who was 5'9" and that man lost by DQ for low blows. Marciano, being 5'11" I think would have been in a similar predicament because Valuev was a shade over 7'0". I have little doubt Marciano would of gotten passed Valuev's long reach and would have started pounding away on the big man's lower midsection, kidneys, waist, arms, etc. but who knows if he would have always been accurate with those shots.

My thoughts exactly.p4p1 wrote:I gotta think if a 150 year old Holyfield can give Valuev a hard night surely a prime rock can batter him into submission.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Marciano by knock out.
If David Price's most recent fights have taught us anything, they have shown us that being big and strong is not enough - you have to have the equal amount of fight in you.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Whoever beat Valuev by just attacking Rocky style. Yes the 5'11'', 188 pound fighter would have taken a good hiding.

No. Just no.polecateddy wrote:Whoever beat Valuev by just attacking Rocky style. Yes the 5'11'', 188 pound fighter would have taken a good hiding.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
There's no similarity at all between Marciano and a spoiler-type old Holyfield.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
The Holyfield fight was past Valuev's prime for starters. And nobody ever went for a full-frontal attack against the guy - which Rocky surely would have to try - because he was too darn big!
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Also because that was Rocky's one and only approach. I think Valuev would find it tough; smaller fighters were the ones that Valuev had trouble with; partly because all 3 (Holyfield beat him, everyone knows it) came in and out and boxed, but partly because he had to punch down at them. Chagaev is 5'11. Rocky would charge in, head down, and he would get to the inside. He would whale away to the body much harder than anyone Valuev fought, and the question would be whether that attack would wear the big man out before his 325 pounds wore Rocky down by leaning. No way of knowing, since neither ever faced a similar challenge, but I'd bet on Rocky to break Valuev's heart; he's too big for his size to be that big of an advantage in this case.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I doubt he'd stop Valuev, simply for the size disparity, but he'd beat him via decision with his nonstop aggression.Rover wrote:My thoughts exactly.p4p1 wrote:I gotta think if a 150 year old Holyfield can give Valuev a hard night surely a prime rock can batter him into submission.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I doubt he would knock him out it is a long way to punch up with power but I could see a situation where he just beats on his arms and body until Valuev had no other choice than to stop.gilgamesh wrote:I doubt he'd stop Valuev, simply for the size disparity, but he'd beat him via decision with his nonstop aggression.Rover wrote:My thoughts exactly.p4p1 wrote:I gotta think if a 150 year old Holyfield can give Valuev a hard night surely a prime rock can batter him into submission.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I agree, and what big punchers did Valuev face?
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
David Haye is the biggest puncher he faced I can think of, and he was rattled by Haye.Rover wrote:I agree, and what big punchers did Valuev face?

I agree. I'll take Rock over Haye.gilgamesh wrote:David Haye is the biggest puncher he faced I can think of, and he was rattled by Haye.Rover wrote:I agree, and what big punchers did Valuev face?

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Valuev was struggling badly with chronic joint issues. I don't think its fair to use Valuev's last few fights as any benchmark of his ability.gilgamesh wrote:David Haye is the biggest puncher he faced I can think of, and he was rattled by Haye.Rover wrote:I agree, and what big punchers did Valuev face?
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Then which fights should we use? What opponents did he fight in them?polecateddy wrote:Valuev was struggling badly with chronic joint issues. Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
He was around his peak when he discovered some punching power and got fighters such as Ettiene and Levin out of there.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Not exactly the strongest comp. Fast Fres KD'd Etienne 8 times.polecateddy wrote:He was around his peak when he discovered some punching power and got fighters such as Ettiene and Levin out of there.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Yes, but Valuev got him out of there 3 times quicker. Anyway it marks the big guys peak. I think the only way little Rocky could beat him is by completely changing his style. Unlikely!Rover wrote:Not exactly the strongest comp. Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I think the fact that knocking out Ettienne marks his peak is the problem. Every live fighter he fought beat him. He got a gift MD against Larry Donald. He just wasn't very good.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
I think Marciano would have broken his fists on Valuev,60 kilogram weight difference is a lot .No so I think that Rocky would win by decision.
Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Valuev also fought him years later--I believe in Etienne's last fight. And saying you stopped someone earlier than Fres Oquendo isn't exactly somethinng to brag about.polecateddy wrote:Yes, but Valuev got him out of there 3 times quicker. Yeah, when we're debating his power v. Oquendo's...says it all.SamWise72 wrote:I think the fact that knocking out Ettienne marks his peak is the problem. Every live fighter he fought beat him. He got a gift MD against Larry Donald. He just wasn't very good.

Re: Nikolai Valuev vs Rocky Marciano, primes
Etiennes last fight was getting mashed by Tyson. It just bothers me that you all can confidently predict a result for 188 pound Rocky, when not a single heavy ever had any success against Valuev charging right at him.
