Wilfredo 'Bazooka' Gomez, My Favourite of All Time

Post by TerribleTerry »

Just wanted to give some space to the greatest Puerto rican of them all (IMO).

Had heard about this guy for years but until a few months back had never seen him fight (I was too young to be around during his reigns). Got hold of 25 of his fights on DVD and was blown away - not only by his crushing power but also his excellent skills, movement, volume punching and the vicious nature of his attacks.

He really is something special - his match with Sanchez at Featherweight has to rank as one of my favourite of all time - what a clash of brilliant little men!

He beat some genuine bad asses down at Super Bantam and Feather and in taking on the likes of Sanchez and Nelson, he showed his fearless nature. He may not have won every great battle he was involved in but he sure made for great fights.

Anyone else got a soft spot for this unrelenting marauder?....

I think Gomez ws a fantastic fighter, but Sanchez murdered him. This shows how good Sanchez was, rather than Gomez being bad.

Gomez is one of my favorites of the 80s. He was a complete package who had it all, speed, skill, power, heart and he put together on of the most impressive title runs in the history of the sport!

I agree.Gomez was a great.I take nothing away from Sanchez,he was another great.BUT,Gomez suffered terribly making weight, and maybe underestimated Sanchez a bit. However,if he had prepared differently, maybe,or maybe not,the outcome would be different.Regardless,Gomez was a great!!!!!!!!!!!

Great fighter!!! One of the best that I have ever seen in the last 27 years of watching boxing. But after that night with Sanchez, his place in history got a little bit destroyed. Sanchez outbombed him and mandhandled him like an old rag. Anyway, great fighter. The best Puerto Rico has ever produced!!! :TU: :TU: :TU:

Gomez doesn't always get his due because of the Sanchez fight but at 122 he was one of the top fighters of all time.Brutal power, defense when he chose to use it,vicious body puncher, and one of the most murderous finishers ever.Where did you get that DVD anyway,I got 7 or 8 of his fights but can always use more of the great Gomez.
